PixInsight won't open files
« on: 2018 February 15 13:44:43 »
I was using Pixinsight just fine until I started to try to open some images from a new target.

I'm running the latest version of Pixinsight on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.12.6.

When I try and open the file I get the message:

/Users/tomtrinko/Desktop/NGC1333 /Calibrated-T24-ttrinko-ngc1333-20180214-205503-Ha-BIN1-W-300-001.fit
<* failed *>
*** PixInsight API Error: MetaFileFormat: FITS: Invalid or nonexistent directory: /Users/tomtrinko/Desktop/NGC1333 /Calibrated-T24-ttrinko-ngc1333-20180214-205503-Ha-BIN1-W-300-001.fit

Now I know the file exists because I picked it using the standard mac open file dialog from the Open file menu option in PixInSight.

I know the file format is ok since it opens in another application.

All the files associated with this one target are having this problem.  But files from other targets aren't.

I've tried moving the NGC1333 folder to the main HD and restarting PixInSight but neither fix the problem.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

Perhaps the blank after 'NGC1333' is causing the trouble?

That seems to be it.  Thanks!  But that must be a bug in PixInSight because Mac OS and even Windows these days allow spaces in file names. Further the standard way of opening a file for reading on a Mac wouldn't depend on spaces in the file path.

I don't think that you can refer that as a bug. See this discussion:

I processed a full picture on Linux, then try to open any of those files from Windows and says (attached image)
The pictures are in a different shared NTFS drive to where Windows 7 64 and Gnome Linux 11.10 are installed

This should not happen. The problem may be due to the space at the end of the "M421000 " directory. White spaces at the beginning or end of a file or directory name should always be avoided. In general, try to avoid spaces in file and directory names. You can use the underscore (_) or hyphen (-) characters for separation purposes. This will save you a lot of problems, not only with PixInsight.

Let me know if this helps.
