Image registration without cropping
« on: 2017 October 05 15:55:25 »
Hi,

Just looking for some help re: registering images. I'm processing images from 3 different nights which have differing camera orientations. When registering the images in PI, it of course keeps the reference image dimensions and cuts off any parts which are beyond those dimensions. Is there any way of registering the images so they all are on a black background and are all included in their entirety? I've tried this with another program and it worked perfectly without adjusting any settings.

Thanks in advance for any help!

one way to do this would be to use StarGenerator to create the reference image that encompasses all the frames in your image.

another way would be to create a reference image by using the register/union mosaic mode of StarAlignment on the two most widely separated images in your set (set one as reference and apply to the other), then use the resultant image as the reference for a 2nd run of StarAlignment on your images.

i don't think there's a way to do this automagically because PI does not compute the union of the frames it is registering when in the default mode of Register/Match.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Rob, much appreciated. I'll give both of those methods a try!
