I just wanted to share with you how you can make a very targeted mask using the RangeSelection tool. I like to use the tool with the screening turned on for some images. The big thing about the tool is the Lower and Upper limits. These are the pixel values for any given location in your image. So using ARP188 as the image I look at the transition area between the background and the outer areas of the galaxy. Using the readout I get this value. This is the lower limit. Then I decide what the upper limit should be in the same manner or leave at 1.0 to capture everything brighter than my background transition zone. I then set a smoothness to accomplish my desired end task.

I can use other masks if needed to remove stars or smaller galaxies but this one tool do so much. I also have a complete record within my project of how I created the mask.

Yes, Pi offers a wealth of ways to create masks, Snip Mask is one of many. Each mask has its own application areas and each user has his own preferences.
Of course I also use RangeSelection, but the tool affects the whole picture. I wanted to create a selective mask. But to my knowledge there is none, with which you can really create any kind of shapes. And sure, you can apply RangeSelection to the snip mask with values as you like.
