How to Process Wide-Field Milky Way Images?
« on: 2017 August 22 17:18:30 »
I am looking for tutorials or instructions for processing "wide-field" Milky Way images.  My imaging setup is a Canon 6D and Rokinon 24 and 35mm lenses and Star Adventurer mount.

Hi,

I have processed Milky Way images with PixInsight quite successfully.  I think the only deviation from DSO processing is during that during ColorCalibration I do not use a "White Reference" but rather use "Structure Detection".  Then onto noise reduction, stretching, more noise reduction, some curves and histogram.  Finally create a starmask (inverted) and curves and saturation to bring out the star colors.

John - just curious why you chose no white balance? Interesting idea. usually i use the stars in the core, but my milky ways have come out greenish. i can fix later, but if it can be corrected earlier, so much the better. I'll give it a whirl

Thanks

Brian

Hi,

I do use the "White Reference" because the Milky Way is relatively dark with only small bright sections.  By selecting "Structure Detections", PixInsight will use the stars as a "White Reference".  Most times I try various combinations of "White Reference/Structure Detection/Background Reference" but have found that the "Structure Detection" seems to work best for the Milky Way.
