PI Desktop Icon Issue
« on: 2017 August 13 07:30:02 »
Since I have upgraded to the latest version, I have lost my nice PI icon.  It now looks like a generic shortcut icon.  Is this true for everyone or do I need to reinstall to get the original icon design back?  The same appearance occurs if I pin it to the task bar.  I am using Win 10.  I can't locate the .exe file to send it as a shortcut to the desktop to see if that changes things.

Happened to me. Had to re-install PI and the icon is back.

I have had to reinstall twice now.  Keeping a close eye on the icon to determine when it changes.

I had the same issue. I resolved by remapping the icon for the shortcut. My install locates the icon in C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin and so far so good.

Hope that helps!

I have the same problem, a missing icon symbol, I thought maybe it's a windows7 cache problem, I deleted the cache and I got this icon instead (from the taskbar):

I assume something is wrong with the latest version of the windows install. (1353)

I have seen this issue on one of our Windows 10 machines. I don't know why this happens. For some reason, Windows suddenly removes the icon associated with the desktop icon and assigns a generic document icon.

The workaround is simple:

- Right click the desktop icon.

- Select Properties.

- Click on Change Icon.... Ignore a "Cannot locate..." error message if it is shown.

- Select "C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin\PixInsight.ico"

- On the PixInsight Properties window, click OK.

I'll investigate why this happens.

This has happened also to me a few times in Win10. If it helps, I think all the times that this happened, I had launched PI directly from the installer as Administrator, but I could be wrong.
In any case, I think it is not a good idea to allow to launch any application from the installer if this implies launching it as Administrator.

Andrés.

I completely agree. The installer is necessarily executed with administrative privileges. When it executes PixInsight, the application inherits the same user settings, which is wrong IMO. I'll remove the "Launch" option from the installer in the next version.

However, this "disappearing icon" issue is being caused by something different. I need to investigate it further.

It has been 3 days now since reinstalling PI for a third time and my icon has not reverted to a generic one.

I experienced the same issue under Windows 7 Professional.  Juan's workaround reestablishes the icon.  I'll report whether the fix sticks.
