Graphics Cards
« on: 2016 March 11 15:12:02 »
Is there any reason to have a higher end video card as far as PI goes? I've gotten most of the parts and this is the last component to acquire. Most new cards cover two slots, usually taking away a PCI/PCIe and there are very few of them these days. I looked at using a M.2 SSD but the price is still way up there. MB has two M.2 slots so there is future expansion possibilities.

Thanks,

Steve

No need for special graphics cards from the performance point of view. Maybe you want to have more screens than 2, or 10 bit color?

I already use two monitors, a NEC MultiSync LCD2490WUXi and a BenQ GW2765 driven by a NVIDIA GeForce GTX750 Ti. I was thinking in reference to this:

GPU Acceleration

As of writing this document (October 2015), the current versions 1.8.x of PixInsight don't make direct use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Hopefully this is going to change during 2016. We are working to implement GPU acceleration via CUDA programming on systems with NVIDIA graphics cards.

Steve

There was an inquiry about this not long ago. Here was the response from Juan and Carlos.

It is mentioned PI is planning to use CUDA in 2016.  Assuming this happens, what would the recommended graphics card specs be?  Quadro, Geoforce GTX, Geoforce GTS, Geoforce GT?   There are too many choices, and most of those choices talk about game performance.

How much of a predicted difference do the number of GPU cores makes?
How do the GPU cores compare to CPU cores?

If the GPU cores are predicted to make a big difference, and a bigger difference than CPU cores, then I can put my money towards a better graphics card.
