Crash 1.8.4.1195 on multiple Win 10 Pro PC's
« on: 2016 January 16 15:45:31 »
Hi All!

I need help.

After installing the latest update to PI I have not been able to use it.  The program crashes after it finishes loading all the modules.  Looking at the Windows log I see that the error ocurred on Qt5Widgets.dll

The Event log is below:

Faulting application name: PixInsight.exe, version: 1.8.4.1195, time stamp: 0x567420a5
Faulting module name: Qt5Widgets.dll, version: 5.5.1.0, time stamp: 0x5620d960
Exception code: 0xc000041d
Fault offset: 0x000000000029ab9a
Faulting process id: 0x27d8
Faulting application start time: 0x01d143ed0fd4a8a0
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin\PixInsight.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin\Qt5Widgets.dll
Report Id: 5f6ca6f3-09af-4a86-bc20-5fdbd04a0af6

After a quick search of the forums I saw that this is the same dll that causes issues with the Dell computers.  Unfortunately I built my own PC and I don't have any Dell software installed in it so there goes that solution path.

The same forum message mentions a possible solution that involves NOT using the native file dialogs in the Preferences for the File I/O settings.  Unfortunately the program crashes as soon as it loads so I have no opportunity to access the Global Preferences menu to change the setting.

So I looked in my archives to see if I had a previous PI Installation download.  Luckily I found five!  1195, 1193, 1185, 1171 and 1123.

I proceeeded to uninstall 1195, followed by a reboot of the PC.  I then installed 1193, ran it and it also failed immediately with QT5Widgets.dll being shown as the offending faulting module.

I followed the same process for all the revisions I had and all of them failed unitl I installed 1123.  1123 ran!  Before downloading any of the updates (there were 22) I changed the Preferences so the application would not use the native file dialogs.

The system seem stable running 1123 but of course, this is not an acceptable situation hence my call for help.

Given that I don't have any Dell software on my system I was curious about how common is the use of this Qt5Widgets.dll module.  I did a search on my system's drive and was surprised to find four instances within the Program Files and Program FIles (x86) folders.  Popular programs like Dropbox and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware use it.  Dropbox's version of the dll 5.4.2.0 while Malwarebytes' is 5.4.1.0.  The other two instances are 5.5.1.0 and 5.3.2.0.  The last one is on a program that came with my Logitech keyboard.

To make matters more interesting I installed PI 1195 in my imaging laptop PC (a Toshiba) and it also crashed right away!

I've been using PixInsight since it became widely available and I love it, in fact I teach it (the little I know) at the local Astronomical Society so this issue affects me greatly.  Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Isaac Cruz

Hi Isaac,

Do you use Malwarebytes on both machines? If yes, then this is a probable cause of conflict. If (1) an application that uses Qt 5 libraries implements shell extensions, and (2) these extensions run along with PixInsight (either directly or indirectly, either as a foreground or background process), and (3) the application uses an incorrectly compiled version of Qt, then this is another incarnation of the same problem we have with Dell's Backup and Recovery software. Please try uninstalling Malwarebytes. If PixInsight runs normally, then you know what happens. Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Juan!

Thank you for the prompt reply!  My apologies for my delay in responding :P

The reason for the delay is that I went through the process of methodically uninstalled all the applications on my PC that used the offending Qt5Widgets.dll.  After each uninstall I rebooted the PC and I tried to run PI but no joy.

At the end I now have a PC where the only instance of Qt5Widgets.dll is in PI and unfortunately when I try to run it I get the same error!

Here's the log from the try this morning:

I honestly don't know what to do next.

Do you have any ideas that can help me?

Thank you!
