TGVInpaint for star size reduction and removal
« on: 2015 December 16 13:37:57 »
In trying to improve my short focal length images I have been experimenting with the new TGV modules from Carlos Milovic. http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=8970.0
I decided to use TGVInpaint not just for star removal but star size reduction.

In this image of the area around Sadr taken with a 45mm lens, I used TGVInpaint first for star size reduction using a star mask for the Support image and a 50 percent gray mask on the image. This allowed the stars to gradually decrease in size. After a few passes I then used TGVInpaint in the normal way to remove certain stars at certain brightness levels. All of this was done while the image was still linear including making the masks.

Both images have the same procesing with the exception of using TGVInpaint.

Looks quite effective, Mike.

I have started using TGVInpaint to help with star removal when processing narrowband colour.  It doesn't replace my old workflow using MultiscaleMedianTrans and MorphologicalTrans but in combination with them does a better job.

Cheers,
Rick.

Mike,

It looks like the color changed between the images.  It seems that there are blue tints in the stars after using TGVPaint that aren't in the original.  Are you seeing the same thing with your data?

Best,

Jim
Really, are clear skies, low wind and no moon that much to ask for?

Jim

In my original subs the stars are not saturated so they still have color. When using TGVInpaint that reduced the brightness of the stars so when they were stretched they still had good color. In the Non-TGVInpaint image the bright stars when stretched are very close to saturated and look very less blue to white. That's all that is going on.
