iMac 27 inch 5k Recommendation
« on: 2015 October 18 10:28:13 »
I'm considering purchasing the new 27" 5k i7-6700 chip iMac to run PixInsight on and have some questions.

I wonder if there are any issues running PixInsight on a 5k monitor? Is PixInsight able to utilize the highest resolution of this 5k display?

Here's what I'm considering:
6th-gen Skylake 4.0 GHz Intel Core i7-6700K processor with 64GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM.

Also, I read that PixInsight might be able to utilize the speed of a higher end graphics card in a future version. Should I spring for the 4gb graphics card upgrade ($250) or is even the M390 version just fine for a PixInsight that is GPU aware?

AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM +$250
AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM
AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM -$50

Also, should I buy the SSD drive or the Fusion drive version?

Many thanks,
Rick

That's very interesting, thanks! Any ideas about the GPU options would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

I can say up front I'm not going to be much help with regard to PixInsight, but I just ordered a 27-inc iMac which is pretty much maxed out, except I went the the 512 GB flash, if that's what you mean by 'SSD.' I have 512GB flash on my MacBook and wherever possible I am done with spinners ..

I know this is sacrilege  :D but I do use programs other than PI; I went with the the 4GB video card since I think it will help with my other photo editing, like, in Lightroom, maybe even 4K video rendering. I don't know that for sure, although I do back that up with an unsubstantiated intuition that the better the specs the longer the machine will have acceptable performance.

I also collect other overly-expensive things like telescopes and cameras so I'd be wary of taking any of my advice :)

Regards,
Luigi Marchesi

Luigi, you are a heretic, and from Italy no less (or at least the Italian side of PA)  >:D
Really, are clear skies, low wind and no moon that much to ask for?
