NGC2359 First Narrowband Attempt
« on: 2015 February 07 09:45:26 »
I made my first narrowband attempt on NGC2359 - Thor's Helmet.  I wasn't expecting fantastic data given the moon, seeing, altitude of target, but was reasonably pleased with the individual narrowband masters.  My attempt at creating an RGB image, though, was lackluster.  Colors were largely soft and just not striking regardless of palette used.  So, I thought I'd post the files and see if anyone wants to take a shot at processing... thanks in advance!

Individual fits for SII, Ha, and OIII:

Same files as above but in a single Zip file:

Hi bhwolf,

I like your imageset  :)
I don't know what was your result, so I also don't know if my short attempt was better then yours. I have created two versions, one with the original Hubble palette and one which is maybe more natural. Underneath the pictures are the corresponding PixelMath expressions. Surely someone else can do it better, but I like it.

Greetings
Tobias

Thank you Tobias!

My main attempt was very similar to your hubble version -- it came out a little over-processed but including it here.  I like the color of the second version you posted, I definitely will try that on my v2.  Because there's so little SII data, I was having a hard time creating sharp/contrasting colors.

Hi bhwolf,

really appreciate your image set. Thank You for providing it. I'm still learning how to use Pixinsight, so I'm sure others can do better with the data, but here's what I was able to come up with:

Hi strand3d,

Thanks for taking a shot at it!  Would you mind sharing your settings for the channels?  Thanks!

Hi bhwolf,

here is the formula I used:

R/K: sii+(0.75*ha)
G: (0.1*ha)+oiii
B: OIII

I also made a copy of the ha exposure and used it as luminance. Processed the combined files and luminance separately, then joined the processed files and did a curves adjustment. Lost some of the faint nebula, probably due to the noise reduction processes I used.
