Comet Processing Advice
« on: 2015 January 09 14:57:39 »
Hi guys,

I managed a quick go at Lovejoy the other night and have been trying to find the best way to process as i have little experience with comet images. I have a stack focused on the stars and one on the comet. I plan on combining them. But first i want to get rid of the remainder of the star trails in the image. This is what burdened me with my only other comet image and i ended up giving up and leaving them in the image. What would you suggest to get rid of these annoying streaks?

a technique that i picked up here is when stacking the comet-aligned images, make (say) 4 stacks, the first with image 1, 5, 10, the 2nd with 2, 6, 11, etc. the stars should be moved enough between each one that you can reject them more easily in these stacks. then you combine the 4 stacks together and hopefully the stars are gone.

you can experiment with how big the gaps should be to get the best rejection.

I have just discovered the comet alignment tool in PI. I put in my Lovejoy subs, did the alignment and then Image Integration to get an aligned comet image with no stars! Kind of interesting. Could someone outline the 'proper' steps to using the tool to get a decent image? I don't mind seeing trailed stars or 'normal' stars.

Just been playing with your suggestion on my lunch break Rob but still cant seem to shake these streaks unfortunately. The result below is as good as i can get. I followed Harry tutorial last night and got almost identical results. I'll continue playing later on tonight but still welcome any other suggestions!
