Suggestion for making this forum more accessible
« on: 2008 July 22 13:52:32 »
Hello,

lots of bugs reports get logged in Spanish. I understand why and who am I to say what language people post in, right? The problem is that you have an international community here and English speaking customers. Bug reports in Spanish pass lots of us by and that's a shame. Could someone on the PTeam please summarize the bug report and resolution as a thread comes to a close?

English is my second language too by the way but I think I'd be pretty lonely here if I started posting in Dutch :)

Thanks,

  Sander
Best,

Hi Sander,

I agree completely. The bugs report section is a very special case. Everybody must be kept informed about new bugs, their workarounds and fixes.

One solution could be a new forum section to implement a sort of "official bug list". The idea is that when somebody reports a bug, a new entry is added to the bug list in both English and Spanish, with a summary of the bug and the known workarounds. This isn't too much work and seems quite easy to implement. What do you think?

The thing is that not all threads in this forum are bug reports but simply misunderstandings. In those cases too a translation would be useful. I have nothing against an official bug/fix forum but it seems a translation at the bottom of threads here would be even more effective, right?

I can only agree with Sander. Especially with the lack of documentation, having this information in English would really help. And making Pixinsight popular with a wider audience certainly requires english language information...

Sander: Sometimes it helps to use the google translate (http://translate.google.de/translate_t?hl=de) or your favorite web translation service to at least understand the idea of the discussion.

Hi Georg,

I know and have used the translation tools and they are great but they won't help with searching this forum :)

I've also found that they often get terribly confused by technical discussions but I'll have to give it another shot.

Thanks,

Of course I agree, but the problem is: who can make such translations? My workload is heavy enough as you know, so I can't promise anything related to this additional task, at least not on a regular basis.

The bug tracking forum is much simpler to maintain for me, since it is essentially a collection of succinct descriptions, and I already need something similar for my own use. I'll try to start this new forum during the next days.

If you think that's easier then it's fine by me Juan. As an aside I tried Google translator and it refused to translate a few because it thought the page was in English. I guess it picked up on the mix of languages or something.

I guess it doesn't really matter. If people want their posts read by the world they'll post in English. If they want only the Spanish contingent to read it, they'll post in Spanish. No big deal.

Sander,

Yes, of course. There are many Spanish users that cannot write English. Usually they can read it, but writing is a completely different thing. Then there are users that cannot read and/or write Spanish. Then there are French users that cannot write English (usually they can read it). Then the same for Italian users, Russian, etc, etc... We have all possible combinations here :)

The ideal situation would be that everything, at least everything important, was available in at least English and Spanish, better if in French too (preferences based on the number of existing users). I'll try to do my best, but in my current situation this has to be very deep in the priority stack.

Thank you for your understanding.
