I've been using the single trial version on my loaded Macbook Pro, 64bit OS X 10.7.4 w/8GB RAM 7 1.75TB HD Storage, I also run Win7/64bit on it for MAXIM/DL, Sky X, ACP, PemPro, FocusMax for work during set-up and aquisistion.

As soon as I purchase PI, very soon now as my trial version just ran out, but at the same time my car decided to break down too  :-[

I will probaby do most of my processing in Win7/64 but only due to the fact I run bootcamp and switching is slower from Mac to PC mode, requiring a full reboot every time, but I find bootcamp more stable and faster than any of the VM set-ups I've tried, since I'll be in Win7 mode anyways, I don't imagine there is much of a difference between the two platforms (I hope), but if so nothing I can't re-learn as I'm still so new to using PI.

I will most likely always run Apple hardware regardless of the platform. 8)

I actually can not run it on Gentoo Linux, AMD 8150 - 8 core. Trying to install but can not get it going. It can not find libraries, managed to get through kerberos authentication but nothing more.
Does any one managed to get it going on Gentoo 64 bit AMD ?????

Please help ... as trial period ticking.

Regards Kris

I voted Mac 32 because I did not know a full OSX 64-bit is available? I have 10.5.7 and I do not know if it is a full 64-bit version; it does some things in 64-bit.

If your Mac is a PowerPC, it is 32-bit. Apple never made a 64-bit PPC that I know of.

the powerPC 970 (aka the G5) chips were 64-bit and came installed in the mac pro of the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC_970

OSX has had 64-bit capability for a long time - the basic capabilities were in v10.4.7.

but i don't think pixinsight was ever compiled for PPC… right?

I have PI on both my desktop (Win 7 Pro 64bit - AMD Phenom quad-core, 8GB RAM) and my imaging laptop (Win 7 pro 64 bit - Intel I5 dual core - 8GB Ram)

Previously (until a horrible hard drive crash  :'(  ) The laptop was running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit with 6GB Ram - repair was an opportunity to upgrade a bit  ;D
PI ran just fine on the earlier configuration and even better now with the extra RAM.

PS:  Maybe it is just me, but I played around with Windows 8 on a friends computer (no PI) and did not like the GUI of this operating system at all.  Too much like a tablet to suit me.  If I wanted my GUI to run like a tablet I would buy a tablet.  But I have a desktop and a laptop.  I want the GUI on them to run like a desktop and laptop.  Old fashioned you say?  Maybe, but I'm the one putting up the cash, so I should be able to get what I want.   >:(
Celestron CPC1100 - Canon 550D (T2i) and of course, Pixinsight!

Not the platform so much as everything else.
i7 processor, 64bit OS and 12-16Gb RAM.  SSdrive for file writing/reading.  For fun, overclock the processor for mosaics.  PI is one of the best processing software packages that takes full advantage of current hardware.

Hi Simon,

I've since switched to Vista x64 and I can't change my poll either so I wouldn't worry about it :)

Vista wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. I still bought a Win7 upgrade when they went for $50 a while ago but I'm not sure if I'll install it right away.
Then you should have bought the Win 8 upgrade for $35. There's really not that much difference between Win 7 and Win 8 once you get past the GUI. And Win 8 is NOT the horrible OS that critics claim it is. MS just placed a bet that people would like the new interface. Beneath that GUI, it's still the same MS mistake of choosing the wrong path for a file system and core. I take that back. It's a bean counter mistake of doing a little to make a lot. I'm certainly glad that Apple isn't like that. (Sorry for the bias.)

Hi all,

I'm looking for an OS for my new PC. I hesitated between PcBSB and Fedora.
When PixInsight will enable GPGPU is PcBSB will be able to support it (CUBA,?)

Thanks
