impossible to open fit files from my qhy9 camera
« on: 2014 January 09 12:51:20 »
hello
I am newcomer to pixinsight and ccd imaging (I used previously an apn)
I have bought a new QHY9 ccd camera and when I try to open the fit files written by my camera with pixinsight I have the following error message for all the files that I try to open:

Reading 1 image(s):
E:/Photos/Astro/2014/01/2014_01_01-flats/ha_flat_2_00000.FIT
Reading FITS: 16-bit integers, 1 channel(s), 3348x2496 pixels:   0%
*** PCL Exception: PCL FITS Format Support: FITS file read error:
E:/Photos/Astro/2014/01/2014_01_01-flats/ha_flat_2_00000.FIT
CFITSIO error message stack:
01 : Error reading data buffer from file:
02 : E:\Photos\Astro\2014\01\2014_01_01-flats\ha_flat_2_00000.FIT
03 : Error reading elements 1 thru 3348 from image (ffgcld).
<* failed *>
*** Error: Unable to read image: E:/Photos/Astro/2014/01/2014_01_01-flats/ha_flat_2_00000.FIT

if I try to read the same file with any other image processing program it works perfectly

if I save the files from this other program in .fit and try to open it after with pixinsight then it also works

any hint or solution?

thanks a lot

Probably there is a problem with the header data. PI follows the standards in a more rigorous way, so if your files do not follow them, they will not be loaded. Other softwares are more permissive, spreading coding errors or misconceptions on the file format.

so if I understand well there is no way for me to open directly the fit files issued from this camera using pixinsight?

if the other program is maxim, you may have it set to save the fits files with compression turned on. i'm not sure this is strictly part of the FITS standard and so CFITSIO (what PI uses to read FITS files) does not know how to parse the file.

thx - the other program is iris (astroart works as well) and when I save my files with it I can open the resulting files with pixinsight, the point is just that it makes additional manipulations...

ok I understand may be it is the acquisition program of the camera (CCDCap) and not the camera itself, so if I try another one to run the camera probably it should work, I have to make this test

interesting. yes it is worth a try to drive the camera with a different piece of software.

JP, I capture using Nebulosity 3.1.8 with my QHY9C and PI loads the FIT files perfectly.

Thanks Gerry, I'll try to use it then - I did not solve the problem yet (apart from oopening and resaving the files under iris)
