How can I preview raw images within PI prior to stacking to toss the images I don't want?

If you open all the images and use STF on them it will give you a screen stretch if that's what you are referring to. I'm not a dSLR guy but that should work.

also you can use the SubFrameSelector script if you want to take a quantitative approach.
