Newbie Would Like To Skip Photo Shop
« on: 2013 January 29 16:30:54 »
Hi All,

Just joined and have purchased license for PI. Is it possible to start with PI and not have to learn PS then unlearn to use PixInsight? I've been looking at the tutorial section, both video, You Tube and power point, have even download some of the LRGB files to play with but they seem matched with older versions of PI and even have some PS steps from the early days. I would like to start fresh and learn one platform only the correct way. Is that possible? Are there any threads for "brand" new and up and coming, want to be Astrophotographers, that would outline a progressive way to start, learn, develop skills and use the product?

I think that part of the difficulty that some people have learning PI has to do with unlearning PS more than anything.  Go through Harry's videos.....they're a good start and should still match up with the application as it is today.

I wish I'd started with PI.....

While I use both s/w packages, and there is a big difference in their look, learning to work with Astro photographs is the best experience. When you know how to process an image, as in what needs to be done at what stages, which s/w you use will not matter too much (not trying to start an arguement here). If you want to only learn PI, then do that. Best of luck.

Hi Jerry!
In my opinion and my experience its a good decision to start only with PI. Because PI covers all image processing steps needed for complete processing of astrophotos.

9 years ago i startet with Astroart (stacking), ImagePlus (calibration, register), MaximDL (gradient removal) and PS (masked stretch) because there was no s/w on the market which covers all needs.
After PI 1.5 arrived  - 3 years ago i decided to end software hopping. As a first step i have REMOVED(!) all the before named programs from my computers
and forced myself to learn how  PI can do everything in one program, because all the other programs only cover parts of astronomical image processing.
The learning in PI was hard at the beginning, but it was also hard at the beginning in the many other programs especially in PS.

Harry`s video Tutorial were a great help at the beginning. Today you find also free tutorials in other languages like Austrian and French.

Enjoy it will be fun.

Aloha Gerald

I started with PI and I am finding there are so many tools that I have no idea what any of them do, Harry's videos got me started.
