PixelMath and masks

Has anyone ever had problems using masks with pixelmath?
I am trying to follow this example (http://blog.deepskycolors.com/archive/2011/09/08/star-size-reduction-via-Morphological-.html), but the final result appears to be the same with or without mask application.
