Failing to install Updates
« on: 2012 October 11 09:58:59 »
Hi PixInsight,
I keep getting a failed update message. Some "MSCV0.dll" file (probably not the exact name of the file) cannot be found. Am I doing missing something?
Tom.

Hi Tom,

It seems your Windows XP is lacking some system files. Try the following:

For 64-bit Windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13523

For 32-bit Windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328

Once you install the appropriate file above, PI should work without problems on your machine.

Hi Juan,
I installed the file, and tried again, but its still failing. When it asks to update the file, it asks for a username and password. I can current user which I think is my laptops name, but it won't work. I fi ise the user name todonoghue and the password you e mailed me months ago it still fails. Can you reset this password? I have 19 updates to install.
Thanks Tom.

Hi Tom,

Quote
it asks for a username and password

We have checked your user account on our server and it works correctly with the new user name and password we sent to you. Just be careful not to include any whitespace when you copy and paste them.

On Windows XP, when Windows asks you for confirmation before installing the updates, you have to uncheck the "Protect my computer..." option. Otherwise the update will always fail.

This happens because Windows XP does not support UAC (User Access Control) technology, which our update system uses for authentication on Windows Vista, 7 and 8. This is one of the reasons why we no longer support Windows XP.

Let me know if this helps.

Juan,
Just to let you know the unchecking of the Protect my Computer worked with my old username. Thanks for your input. All updates are now installed.
Thanks Tom
