Installation in Fedora
« on: 2011 November 06 09:39:51 »
Hola,

Hello,

I have installed PixInsight in Fedora with Gnome 3.0.1. After installation tells me that there are 12 updates, I select install and after download Pix closed alone. Then I can not reopen it if I do not restart the pc.
When it start again indicate that there are 12 updates and repeat the process.
I have no experience with Fedora, any idea what I am doing wrong?

Saludos.
Alejandro.

Hi Alejandro. After downloading the updates and closing PI - don't reboot - instead, go to the pixinsight/bin directory and open a terminal in that folder (or just open a terminal and cd to the directory) and type;

$./Pixinsight

I'm not near my PI computer so it could be

$./pixinsight

See if PI starts, if not, note any error messages. Alternatively refer to the log file if it exists. That might give you a better idea of what's going on.

Or, just delete the installation and try again.

Which version of Fedora? Fedora 14 works fine for me.

Hi Alejandro,

Sorry for overlooking this post  :-[

This is a GTK error (look at the two lines starting with 'Error loading theme icon ...'). I've seen it with GNOME 3 and also one user has reported it with GNOME 2.6. Could be some update that has broken something.

If you're running Fedora 15 then you're probably using GNOME 3. PixInsight runs without flaws on GNOME 2.x (with the possible exception I've mentioned above), Xfce 4.6 and 4.8, and the latest versions of KDE. We'll try to fix these problems with GNOME 3 in the next release; however, we can't promise anything because GNOME 3 is 'evolving' too quickly (I'd rather say it's 'self-destroying', but that's another story).

For stability and performance, I strongly recommend you run PixInsight on Xfce or KDE. If you have the Fedora 15 DVD it comes with KDE ready to install. The same for Fedora 16.
