PixInSight Keeps Crashing on my iMac
« on: 2010 October 03 23:35:44 »
I have PixInSight Core 01.05.09.0561 (x86) installed on my iMac, and whenever I start it I get several error msgs:

- PixInSight was unable to initialize the color management subsystem. etc

- The profile file does not exist: /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/iMac-4272D40.icc

I'm not sure if I was supposed to create this file, or if it was supposed to have been created when the installation took place.  Anyway, the app continues to load and appears okay.  When I try to load a .jpg or .fit file, PixInSight crashes totally, spitting out a Problem Report to be optionally sent to Apple.

This is a relatively new behavior - I used to be able to open either type of file without issue.  I suspect my crash problem may be connected to the startup errors I note above.

Any ideas what I should do to get things back on track?  Or do I just uninstall PixInSight and reinstall from scratch?  Sorry, I don't know what info others need to help me, so if there's a dump file or something that would help you help me, just let me know.

Thanks!!
Rod

Sorry, my bad... once I figured out what the first two error msgs were complaining about, the crashing problem appears to have been fixed.

However, there's nothing forcing you to color calibrate your iMac when you get it, thereby creating the missing profile file - I've had mine almost a year, and only PixInSight was upset that the profile hadn't been created by me via the System Preferences dialog box.  Is there a warning or suggestion to create this profile that comes up during PixInSight installation that I missed? Its a pretty subtle issue with a dramatic result for PixInSight. And since PixInSight crashes without the profile, it can't tell you what the problem is in any more detail.

BTW - should the PixInSight Preferences menu item be greyed out?  Mine is.

Hi Rod,

Welcome to PixInsight Forum.

All of those problems are definitely fixed in 1.6.x versions. The latest version of PixInsight for Mac OS X is 1.6.1.625. I strongly recommend you install it, along with this important bug fix published on the Announcements board. There are also updated versions of the ColorCalibration and ImageIntegration modules, with new tools (LinearFit and HDRComposition).

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Juan - I thought I was up to date with the releases, but obviously I've been asleep at the wheel  :P  ... I'll get my software updated and load the new tools this morning!

BTW, I was VERY happy to hear about the upcoming documentation. I've been a PixInSight licensee since 2008, but its always been frustrating to use as I was reduced to a trial-and-error approach. Its like owning a Ferrari but not knowing how to change up from first gear: you KNOW there is immense potential waiting to be used, but you can't figure out how to get at it.
