PI 1.6.1: What about BlindSolver ?
« on: 2010 July 29 08:09:00 »
Hi all,

I updated to PI 1.6.1 on my SUSE 11.3 64 bit System.
When I try to reinstall the BlindSolver (from Georg Viehover) script, the system is missing the
"SystemCommand" Function.
When I try to re-use the SystemCommand Module from the previous
1.6.0 Version I get (of course!!)

Installing 1 module(s):
/home/chris/PixInsight/bin/SystemCommand-pxm.so
<* failed *>
*** PixInsight API Error: Module: /home/chris/PixInsight/bin/SystemCommand-pxm.so: Module initialization error: Exit code: 1
*** Warning: No modules were installed.

Can this Module be supplied by anyone for the current PI Version ?
Kind regards,
      Christoph

Hi Christoph,

I am glad to hear that there are users of the BlindSolver script and the related SystemCommand. Unfortunately, I have not yet found the time to recompile SystemCommand, but hope to do so this weekend. I''ll post it when its ready.

Your request highlights one of the issues I have with PCL: Currently, each PCL module needs to be maintained by its writer (as long as it is not adopted by Juan). Also, it is usually impossible for us amateurs to provide executables for all those PI platforms (Win32/64, Lin32/64, Mac32/64, FreeBSD, iOS   ;), ... ). This appears to be a problem not only for my PCL module, but also for some implemented by Carlos, Sander and others.

I wonder if it was possible to provide a repository for "contributed software" (i.e. not part of core PI) that automatically re-compiles PCL modules for new versions and all platforms.

Hi Georg and Christoph,

I'll try to rebuild Georg's SystemCommand module (you uploaded the source code did you). It has not been included in this version because the same functionality (execution of external processes) is being implemented on the platform and will be available in the next version, along with a new module security scheme.

I'd also like a repository with automatic building functionality; that would be really great! But, how? I have what I have (and you'd be surprised if you'd know the 'speed' of my Internet connection, for example).

So, for now, we have a unique and fantastic automatic repository: Juan. Its only drawback is that it's a bit slow, but he is definitely your best option ;D

Other than the obvious problem to build on different platforms, this is the last time that you have to recompile a PixInsight module (unless something catastrophic happens). The new PCL guarantees that.

As a side note, with VMware --which is really cheap for what it offers-- you can build modules on all PixInsight platforms except Mac OS X. If you want to use a free virtualization tool, you have VirtualBox, although its performance isn't comparable (and it lacks support for FreeBSD completely).

The source code is here: http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1791.msg11222#msg11222

So far I refrained from using PCL just because of those portability issue between PI releases and the difficulties to get them compiled on all platforms. I am just pushing to get both of those issues resolved somehow. At least for me it is cleary not an option to install all platforms (even in a virtual machine). I probably dont have to tell you how much work it is to get accustomed to an additional platform, and to keep it current...

Hi Georg and Juan,

thanks to you all !
I really use BlindSolver very intensely - by the way I also discovered some object on my photos, that I
did not "see" before (thanks also to advanced PI processing)  :D

Hi Christoph,

I currently cannot run PI 1.61 on my Linux system, see http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=2126.0 . For the moment, you'll have to do the compile yourself (instructions are included in the original SystemCommand post), wait for Juan to do it, or wait for me to upgrade m Linux installation (which is unlikely the next few days). Sorry  :(
