Noise reduction stops working
« on: 2007 June 27 21:11:19 »
I was processing an image tonight, having gone through a series of deconvolutions and curves.  The final step was noise reduction.  In running both GREYCstoration and ACDNR, neither had any effect on the image.  I cranked the parameters to maximum, and there was no change to the image in either preview or full mode.

I restarted the application and it worked fine.

Thought you would want to know.

Hi Andy,

I haven't been able to reproduce this behavior. It seems to be one of those weird problems that arise from time to time. Have you experienced the same problem again?

If you have a good Linux box at hand, I strongly recommend you to run PixInsight on it. It is by far more stable and efficient, and Linux is now our real development platform (we only use Windows to recompile the whole platform upon each release).

Thank you

I think it was, as you say, one of those wierd problems.  It has not recurred.

I have a server (P3 800 mhz x2) and my laptop (P3 1ghz) running Linux, but my real workhorse machine (Core duo 2.5 Ghz) is Windows (or Windoze if you prefer).  With MaximDL, The Sky, CCDStack, and Photoshop not operating under Linux, I feel that I am married to the Windows platform.

Clear skies,

With today's Linux distributions and cheap hard disks, it is very easy to have a dual-boot machine. I strongly recommend this to have the possibility to work under both Linux and Windows on the same machine.

For example, the machine I'm writing this right now is a Dual Core with 4 GB of RAM and two Western Digital 250 GB SATA hard disks. The first disk has XP SP2 installed and the second one Fedora Core 6, where I work daily.

Another very interesting possibility is to build a pure Linux machine and run Windows XP on a virtual machine like VMWare.

Finally, it is always a good idea to ask the authors of the other applications (I refer to MaximDL, The Sky, and CCDStack, specifically) to write portable applications supporting Linux and Mac OS X. With the excellent development tools available today for cross-platform development, it is really quite easy. For example, for PixInsight we use Qt (www.trolltech.com) to build its entire GUI that is 100% portable. Our core development tools (PCL library) are also 100% portable.
