Vista license file location
« on: 2009 July 28 12:36:00 »
Two questions about the commercial installation on Vista64:

1. Vista will not allow a 'dot' at the beginning of the file name (Vista setting change) ?
2. Where should the license file be located ?

Thanks for helping a noob !

Vista allows any windows file name, including the .blah file that PI requires. You may have to enable some explorer option to *see* to the file but it'll be there. I'm pretty sure PI looks in c:\users\<your name> .

Yep have the file in the right spot....but when I try and put a "dot" on the file, windows gives me a "you must enter a file name" error.

Great! I copied the file from my NAS so I didn't run into this issue. I just needed to tell explorer to show me the darn file. Juan should probably not use this .blah filename for windows.

I agree. The idea behind the initial dot was to keep the license file hidden on Linux, which is PixInsight's reference platform. Then I "exported" it to the rest of platforms (clearly a bad decision), although I already had to remove it on Mac OS X, due to the difficulties to manage hidden files on that OS.

I plan on changing some key aspects of the licensing system in a future release. For example, on the Mac, the license file should be located, along with the settings file (PixInsight.ini), on a ~/Library/PixInsight folder, instead of the user's personal folder, as happens now. On Windows, the initial dot will be removed, and maybe other changes should also be desirable —let me know what you think in this regard.

Sorry for the inconveniences!
