Which image unsaved?
« on: 2019 March 16 21:33:36 »
Hi All,

You know how it is, you have just finished processing.  You have 20 or more images saved over 3 or 4 workspaces.  You think you have saved the important ones.  You have saved the project.  You go to close PI and you get this message:

"One or more images have been modified and are unsaved.  Unsaved pixel data will be permanently tost. Exit Anyway?"

 :-\

Does this just apply to the images that I have specifically saved, or to all the images?

Which images????  How can I tell if it is unsaved?  I can't find any indicator if an image has "unsaved pixel data", and I don't want to go back and manually re-save all images.

any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!  :-)

if you have saved the project (and saved every workspace in that project) then nothing will be lost. if you re-open the project the state of PI will be exactly as it was when you saved the project.

generally speaking the "dirty/clean" logic in PI is very conservative. it doesn't count having saved a project as saving an individual file (though the image and all of its history *is* saved in the project). furthermore if you load process icons from disk, then close PI, it complains that the process icon set is modified and will be lost... yes, with respect to a blank desktop, the process icons have been modified, but even if you have not added one or changed one, you'll get this message when you quit PI.

as to your question, i'm not sure there is a way to see which files have been modified but not saved.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the explaniation.  That's pretty much what I expected.

However from a UI point of view this is a silly message.  There is noting you can do with it and it just leave you feeling you have missed something.

Saving a project does not clear the modified status of an image in PixInsight. This is because the fact that you have saved a project does not change the fact that a modified image should not be closed without giving a chance to save it. Projects and images are different and independent objects.

Silly maybe, but useful to prevent data losses as far as possible. If you really want to exit PixInsight unconditionally without being asked, enter the following command in the Process Console window:

   exit --force

but do that at your own risk.

There are several ways. One of them is obviously the information control bar (usually located at the bottom right side of the main window), where you'll see a 'Modified' tag for a modified image. Another way, best suited to review all open images quickly, is the View Explorer window, where you can inspect the modification counter property: it it's > 0, then the image has been modified since it was saved without data loss.

Amazing! I’ve never noticed this.  Always something more to find out about this great program.
