Installed 01.08.06.1448 and PI will not open??
« on: 2018 December 24 09:26:04 »
I just installed 01.08.06.1448 on my Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon v3.8.9 system and cannot get it to run. 01.08.05 ran fine. There is no error message - the application just will not open?? The terminal window indicated that the previous version was removed and that the new installation was complete. I've restarted my system, I re-downloaded the software and installed again with another system restart - all attempts have been unsuccessful. Below is a screen shot of the app permissions (/usr/share/applications/PixInsight.desktop). Are these correct? Should be changed? Thoughts and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I found a forum thread that corrected the issue (see below) for Linux users. Posting for others to see/incorporate. Big thanks to Manuel Correia Ramos for posting the solution!

Launch a terminal session with root permissions  (or add SUDO before each command) and type:

cd /opt/PixInsight/bin/lib/
mv libz.so.1 libz.so.1.old
ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1

Reboot the system and PixInsight will execute normally afterwards.

Hi Mike,

PixInsight 1.8.6 works perfectly out-of-the-box on Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. We have tested the new version on this popular Linux distribution.

There is no libz file in the 1.8.6 distribution for Linux, and there is no dependency on libz either, so what you have described means that you have probably installed version 1.8.5 instead of 1.8.6. Please make sure you have downloaded and installed the 1.8.6 installation archive.

As noted above, PixInsight 1.8.6 runs without any problems on Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. There should be no need to make any changes to the official distribution; it should run directly after installation. If this is not the case, then something very strange happens in your Linux installation.

All I know is that PI 01.08.05 worked fine, PI 01.08.06 installed fine but the application would not open until I executed the commands listed above. Not sure why but I'm just glad I'm back in action.

Hi Juan, I am experiencing the exact same issue again (detailed at the top of this thread) with the latest PI release ...1457-20190122... The application will not open in my Linux Mint Cinnamon environment. The tar file resides in my home/mike/pi-install directory. I followed the Linux install instructions, "yes" was the setting to uninstall the previous PI version, etc. The screen shot below lists libz files. Should I do a complete uninstall of PI and a fresh reinstall (assuming this was taking place with the ./installer script). Appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks.

In order to access PI now, while waiting for a response, I executed the same commands from my terminal, rebooted my system and PixInsight successfully launched afterwards.

cd /opt/PixInsight/bin/lib/
sudo mv libz.so.1 libz.so.1.old
sudo ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1

Mike,

As noted above, there is no libz* file in the bin/lib installation directory of PixInsight 1.8.6, and there should be none under normal working conditions. PixInsight 1.8.6 runs without any problems on Linux Mint just as it is normally installed. I have just checked this on a clean Mint 19.1 installation.
