Watermarks/Copyrights
« on: 2012 May 11 09:54:22 »
Hi,

I'm just looking on how to put watermarks/copyrights on pictures to protect them, but I can't find it on all pictures format in pixinsight. is it normal ?
I found a copyright's checkbox when I save a picture with tiff format, but can't the same when I save my picture in jpg format.

And second question, how copyright works in pixinsight ? is it steganography method , or only a tag in the metadata  ?

thanks in advance for your answer and help :)

regards,
Sebastien

Hi Sebastien,

We have no watermark or stenography method implemented in PixInsight. It could be done as a module but this is not a priority for us at present.

We plan to support metadata in XMP (including AVL) format, but unfortunately this is still not implemented in PixInsight. We'll implement full XMP support and the related metadata editing tools during the 1.8 version cycle.

So for now, the quick answer is that we only support metadata as FITS header keywords in FITS files. For the rest of formats, besides the standard TIFF text items, existing metadata in images will be lost when you save them in PixInsight. I am aware that this is a limitation for some people, and will try to overcome it as soon as possible.

I was trying to find information on XMP and AVL.  Is it AVM by any chance ? (http://www.virtualastronomy.org/avm_metadata.php)

thank you for your answer.
I understand, and hope you will find some time to do it in a future release.
I will do it through another tool until we have something in pixinsight ;)

Sebastien

Yes, AVM is short for Astronomy Visualization Metadata. Once we implement XMP support I see no reason to not extend it to AVM.

Hello, I wanted to dig this post up because I've been trying to figure out how to get my images into WWT (world wide telescope).

I've not been able to figure out how to get the AVM tags into the metadata of the images.

Has this been implemented now that we're in 1.8 ?

Hi Juan,

I am also keenly interested in the status of supporting AVM in PixInsight. Does PI v1.8.06 have XMP support? Of particular interest to me would be support for tracking WCS changes from FITS as an image is rotated, scaled and/or cropped to create the final version, and then being able to write updated WCS into the relevant AVM keys.

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

I agree that both XMP and AVM are essential and should be implemented in PixInsight. Unfortunately, we have had and still have many high priorities before implementing their support. As you know I am basically alone working on the PixInsight core application, its development frameworks, and the vast majority of tools. So this is something I cannot afford for now.

Actually, XMP, and hence AVM, would fit very well in the XISF format, since XISF headers are XML documents. If anyone is interested in implementing this feature, I'd be glad to assist.
