Windows 10 tries to re-install PixInsight
« on: 2018 September 29 07:42:56 »
All -
In Windows 10 when I click a project file or a fits or xisf image file I get the following error "Product: PixInsight -- Error 1706. An installation package for the product PixInsight cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'PI-windows-x64-01.08.05.1353-20170809-c.msi'." However they do open normally from within PixInsight. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks for the help.
Frank

i dont know much about windows but this sounds like a windows file explorer file type association problem. you will have to google how to do it, but what you need to do is associate the relevant file types with the pixinsight application - they are some how currently associated with the pixinsight installer.

Go to one of the files like XISF point to it with to right mouse button (depending on how your mouse is set up), to pull up a menu and select properties/general. You should see an opens with selection that you can change using the change button. This has always been a common feature for file association in all windows versions.

I have tried both of your recommendations. Neither work but thanks. I noticed that a separate icon was created for starting a second instance of PI, so windows must have changed something.

FYI - I discovered that Maxim DL is interfering with PixInsight. I removed Maxim and now everything seems to work okay, except that Windows has still associated fits files with Maxim even though it is gone.
