Trouble generating a star mask

Hi,

I want to create a mask to protect the main central structure and stars. After that I want to apply a histogram stretch to the remaining data. Problem is, every mask I try to produce seems to cover either one or two stars or the entire image. I can't seem to get the parameters correct.

I've followed some tutorials but they haven't been able to get me to the right solution.

Any tips or steps I should be going through that may help with this?

Is this what your looking for. First I used ABE to equalize the background. Variations in the background make it hard to make a mask that can detect all stars, especially with a linear image. I used the Statistics tool for the parameter values for the star mask tool. I have a video showing the basics of this method. Here is the posting with a link to the video.
