Modify Masks with paint/draw tool
« on: 2009 May 08 08:24:32 »
** Modify Masks with paint/draw tool. ***

Sometimes the masking tools such as star mask needs a manual touch up.

Perhaps it leaves a bit of nebula that you would like to remove or there are a few bright stars need more coverage.

Sometimes a quick touch up by drawing on the mask does this better and faster than anything else.
Right now I do this in PS.
I would be nice to do this in PI. Besides not everyone has PS.

Yes it would be nice if PI could do that. The problem is that once you add simple features people will want more and before you know it you're writing a whole new image editing program.

For those of us who use Windows but don't have Photoshop I can recommend PaintShopPro X2 which is far cheaper (look for OEM disks) but can edit 16 bit TIFF files. On linux there's CinePaint which is a GIMP derivative that also supports 16 bit images.

Besides, many masks work fine in 8 bit depth and then there are far more options.
Best,

Clone stamp works great for most of all situations to modify a mask.

I understand what you are saying Sander.

However, I thought that this what the wish list area is all about.
No one expects all wishes will be granted.

I would have to by a bigger christmas tree next year if this were true.  8)

This is an official announcement: there will be painting and layering tools in PixInsight  :). These tools should provide bitmap-based and vector graphics editors, as well as a complete layered composition system. The new SVG format support in v1.5 is just a part of this.

Right but the wish list is also about offering alternatives to wishes so that Juan's attention can be focused on things no other tools can do. So please keep posting your wishes but in some cases you can expect people to say they'd rather not have that new feature.  O:)

Of course Juan has already said he's doing this anyway but I still wanted to make the point.

Not a problem.

It appears Juan's upgrade will be more than anyone expected.
The Gods of Image processing are truely on his side.
May the "source" be with you Juan.

Did the SVG make it into 1.5?
Where do I find it?

I see the SVG image format is available.
I don't see the paint, mask and layer capabilities to support it.
Are these features upgraded somewhere in V1.5?

Hi Max,

Image edition tools are not yet available in version 1.5. SVG support is just part of the foundations to implement these functions. I hope we'll have a complete suite of drawing and text edition tools implemented during this year, including full support for layered compositions. This is the intent, at least! :)
