Pixinsight license file stolen
« on: 2018 February 04 18:01:28 »
Hi there,

I've been trying to contact Pixinsight through the contact Us page for weeks now without any response from the team so now here I am

Basically what had happened is that my observatory had a break in and my laptop that contained my license file was stolen. Now i've been really worried that my license file could be distributed elsewhere.

I have since reactivated my license file but is there a way to block my existing license file to be used anywhere else except for the machine that i have it currently installed on?

I am really getting worried and concerned. Please advise.

Thank you

Kind Regards,

Offline Geoff

They would also need to have a secure password to download PixInsight, so just having the licence is not enough. They would also have to be astroimagers to even know what PixInsight was about.

It was not only the laptop that got stolen but one of my scope and eye pieces. Thankfully my CMOS was never touched. The software is already installed on the laptop with the license file and anyone can get the trial. Chances are whoever was the bad person (trying to keep my composure together) knew exactly what he stole and knew exactly where to flog it. There's just too big of a risk there. I don't want to take such risks.

Hi Ahmed,

We have answered your support emails. Please check your spam folder, and make sure your email provider (msn.com) is not blocking messages sent from our corporate email server (pixinsight.com). Or much better, provide us with a different email address (not on a Microsoft email service) to associate with your license. If you cannot receive our emails, we cannot contact you and you cannot use your PixInsight license.

Hi Juan, thank you so much for your quick reply. I had made sure any emails from your server goes to my mailbox direct but this time it didn't.
I can confirm I've nOw received the email on 2nd of eBay.
Can I ask, I's there a way to completely block the old license file? I know you mentioned in the email that it's not possible but was just hoping there would be a clever way for you guy to block any usage of my old unique identifier (which I'm happy to send you in private)
Thank you once again.

Hi Ahmed,

You're welcome. No, it is not possible. As long as the license file is valid and does not get corrupted, the PixInsight core application will be able to decrypt it and read its contents. In other words, once you have activated your license, you can install and use it on every computer you own and control, on any supported platform, without reactivating your license. This is true for every 1.x version of PixInsight, including all versions that we have released and will release. That's just how our licensing system works, and a necessary condition to comply with the terms of our End User License Agreement (EULA).

However, since we have assigned a new unique identifier (a 16-digit number) to your license, your old license file cannot be used to supplant your identity anymore. We have also changed the password of your user account on our server and only you know it (on a side note: as a basic security measure, new passwords should be requested often). So you don't have to be concerned with this. On the other hand, as we said in our answer email, our software is too cheap and specialized as to be of any practical interest for a typical thief. Most likely your stolen computer has now its hard disk reformatted, and your old license file does not exist. So just enjoy PixInsight with your renewed license!
