PixInsight is not capable to retain my settings
« on: 2013 August 06 18:24:41 »
Yesterday I set under global preferences  the default swap directory to y:\ because I have a SSD disk on that drive.
Today it again appears as C:/users/..../Local/Temp.
Every time I use PixInsight, I have to adjust that again.
The settings remain during the session, but the next time I use PI, it is a lottery if it will retain my settings or use its own default again.

Something similar occurs with default settings for loading raw DSLR images:
I have to check  every time it does not debayer images during read....because with no reason, next time or few days later it again debayer images during load.

Please permit us select our defaults and write them to a user profile or let us load them from a .ini file upon start...

Regards
Geert

Bump.

I too am having this issue, with 01.08.05.1353 on Win 7.

Recently PI filled my C:/ with swap files, hosed itself, and made the OS complain.

C:/ for me is a relatively small SSD meant to hold only the OS and programs.  I have created swap directories on E:/, F:/, G:/ and H:/ all of which have GB to spare...

But every restart it gets reset to C:/Users/Dana/AppData/Local/Temp and all the others get deleted.

you know what, i have this issue as well on OSX and i think it's been there in all 1.85 versions of pixinsight. i thought i was just losing my mind... but it does seem that PI forgets the custom swap file location on every restart, and resets back to /tmp.

having said that, i thought that juan was going to move the default swap directory from /tmp to a directory in the user's home directory, due to the problem where OSX auto-cleans /tmp every week or so and deletes all of PI's .swp files... but the default location still seems to be /tmp.

I cannot reproduce this problem on any platform, including macOS (10.10, 10.11, 10.12). The selected swap storage directories are always restored on each application execution on all of our machines.

On macOS we have an additional problem: the system temporary directory (on /var/folders) may change arbitrarily, typically after a few days. If you open the Preferences tool and click the Reset icon, you'll see that the current system tmp directory is set automatically on the Directories and Network section. The selected directory will be remembered. However, this is not a good solution because, as noted, the selected directory may not be available after some time.

I'll fix this issue on the next version with a special 'meta folder' that will always refer to the current system temporary directory, irrespective of its actual location. This is still not implemented in the current 1.8.5 version.

what about if you do a force-quit on PI and then restart?

i have had a couple of hangs lately that had to be resolved with a force quit...

OK, it's not resetting every time (honestly I don't check it every time) because this morning I had all of the settings from yesterday.  But it has reset more than once.

Obviously, if you force-quit an application it has no chance to save anything, including its own settings and the data being processed. Force-quit on macOS is the same as killing a task on UNIX and Linux.

yes but don't you write the settings out at the time the user does the global apply on the Global Settings pane? certainly flush() exists on OSX :)

i think there's a chance this stuff is getting reset after application of updates. obviously i can't test this until you push another update...
