Creating colour images from non-RGB broadband filters

Does anybody have experience that they would be willing to share about creating colour images from broadband filters other than the typical R/G/B ones, e.g. from SDSS data?  I have some thoughts on how to do this but would be happy to not to reinvent wheels if there is some expertise on the forum that I can tap.  Pointers to useful info would also be appreciated.

After the forum thread mentioned by Troy, Vicent and I wrote a small tutorial where we describe in detail the method of color filter synthesis we used for the Alhambra survey:
