Installer for V1.8.5 Win 7 SP1 Hangs
« on: 2017 August 10 20:41:52 »
The installer for V1.8.5 Win7 SP1 (PI-windows-x64-01.08.05.1352-20170802-c.exe) does not run. Two windows quickly flash and disappear without subsequent activity. The Task manager shows the process is there but not running.  A clean Windows boot still results in the same effect.  The installer for V1.8.4 works fine, and that is what I have reverted to since I can't install the new version.

The previous version was uninstalled and the antivirus disabled when I unsuccessfully tried to install the new version.

It appears I am stuck using V1.8.4 for now.

Please advise

Hi,

This cannot be reproduced. The installer program works perfectly on all Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 machines where we have tested it. This has not been reported before AFAIK. Can you try on a different machine?

The installer runs on my laptop with Windows 7 Home Edition and a newer Razr 4K laptop with Windows 10 Home edition.  The workstation I am having problems with runs Windows 7 Professional with SP1.  Could that be the difference?  I can see the two popup windows quickly flash on the screen in all cases, but the agree to terms and conditions window never comes up on the workstation.  Under Task Manager, I can see the installer process sitting inactive, consuming no CPU. Could it be waiting for some response from me that I don't know about? The workstation is fairly clean.  I run mostly Pixinsight and some Photoshop on it, since it is dedicated to astroimage processing.

Re: Installer for V1.8.5 Win 7 SP1 Hangs [Solved]

I finally successfully installed V1.8.5 for this computer workstation by performing a diagnostic startup and loading only the Windows Installer service.

V1.8.5 installs normally on my windows 10 and windows 7 home edition laptops.

My computer workstation runs Windows 7 Professional with SP1, so there must be some conflict in this case with either the operating system or services loaded at startup.  The barebones startup must be used.  To set this up, run msconfig. Under the general tab select diagnostic startup, and under the startup tab select windows installer only.  Reboot and run the V1.8.5 installer.

Hi the new version crashes immediately on my laptop running 10. The previous version was excellent. Once I start the new version up it crashes on the first thing I do. It also says there are 7 updates. I download those and it is difficult to apply them as I go to FILE to close then the  s/w crashes before I can scroll down to close. I have to reboot my computer or ctrl alt delete and end task.

I have removed the s/w and downloaded it again and applied the 7 updates and it still crashes immedialty. My laptop is less than 6 months old, very powerful and worked with the previous version. I'm stuck!

This cannot be reproduced on any of our working and testing machines, on any platform. From what you describe, this looks like a serious issue with your graphics driver, but I cannot know without further information. Some specific error messages or a system log would help.

Definitely, this does not happen under normal working conditions. I suggest trying on a different machine, and/or on a clean Windows 10 installation.
