Combining osc images with luminance images.
« on: 2017 May 19 14:52:28 »
Hi Everyone,

I am hoping someone can advise me on the following problem I might be about to give myself!

On my way to lrgb and narrow-band imaging I am considering combining osc data from my existing 414ex osc with luminance data from a 460ex mono, both mounted separately on the same OTA. The FoV for the two cameras is almost identical 1.01 x0.75 degrees compared with 0.98x0.74 degrees. What is the best approach for combining the two sets of data within PixInsight.

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice - including "you must be mad" and "don't do it"! - from the eternally cloudy U.K.

Yes, that's feasible.  The difference in image scale is less than you would get from binning the colour x2 on a single camera and plenty of people do that.

If you use a luminance sub as the reference for registration then the OSC data will be upscaled to match.  Do your initial processing of the colour and lum data and then combine them with LRGBCombination.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thank you Rick.

I am still a bit of a novice with PI and I thought it was possible but was hoping for some reassurance. I thought I might be going down the PixelMaths route but it sounds like it will be more straightforward than I imagined.

When funds allow I will take the plunge and get the filters and wheel and do the job properly but I thought I might take an intermediate step and combine both camera images and see how that works for a while at least.

Thanks again  :)

Hi Adrian,

I have even taken a fully-processed RGB image (from an OSC source) and 'added' it to a fully-processed Lum image simply by using the DynamicAlignment process to register one image against the other - and then to use the LRGBCombination tool to add the whole lot into one new image.

Don't worry - what you seem to be trying to do has been tackled regularly by other PixInsight users. However, that said, if you do have problems, you should be able to get help here on the forum.

Hi Niall,

Well I was hoping that once I get the 428ex mono I can reimage some targets I have already successfully imaged using the 414ex osc (e.g. M51, M101, M81/82, M33) and try adding a separate luminance channel just to see if it improves the sharpness and detail.

With no shortage of cloudy nights I'm sure I'll have time to spare to play with PI - which has totally transformed the results I get compared with how I was processing images when I first got going nearly 12 months ago.

Thanks again for the advice and guidance.

Adrian :)
