Nikon D810A - RAW Decoder
« on: 2017 April 07 21:28:49 »
Hi all.

I have a question regarding the ability of PixInsight to read my D810A's raw files like it's nothing : where does it get such ability from ?

The context of the question is that I use DxO OpticsPro 11 for my general photo editing. It can read my old D800E raw files just fine - allowing me to use all raw editing capabilities - but not the D810A ... I harassed their customer support about an update that would include support for the D810A, but so far to no avail. I find it odd since I imagine Nikon released some code allowing third parties to read the files (therefore is public tech) ?? Or did the staff at PixInsight had to write their own bit of raw decoder in order to deal with the D810A (and then it's proprietary) ? Depending on that I just hope to get back to DxO and keep pushing for an update ...

Thanks in advance for your help !

Hmmm I checked that a few weeks ago, and the D810A doesn't appear in the list. Unless I'm mistaken ?

from some cursory googling it appears that the D810A is just a D810 with an IR cut filter that permits the Ha wavelength to pass through. since the D810 is apparently supported by DCRAW i think that's why it works.

Thanks for searching Rob, the D810 is supported by DxO OpticsPro which somehow did not make the D810A files readable. Darktable and Gimp seem to be having issues too ... so yeah, one way or an other PixInsight does not have such problems, and if a dev reads this I'd appreciate some insight (no pun intended).  ^-^

P.S. : I remember Apple's Preview didn't read the D810A raw files either, but at some point an update allowed it

it could simply be that this other software has a strict check for the model name and fails even though it would otherwise work OK. DCRAW seems to always err on the side of permissiveness. i am not sure juan is going to have anything to say since all DSLR decoding is entirely handled by dave coffin's code. i suppose if there is a forum out there where people discuss DCRAW you might get some insight there...
