.RAF preprocessing help -- apply a bayer matrix?
« on: 2017 March 26 19:17:35 »
Hello All,

I'm currently shooting with a Fuji X-T2 which I love for terrestrial photography and given its respectable low light, long exposure performance I'd like to use it for some astrophotography. Initially I couldn't get Pixinsight to open the .RAF files coming from the X-T2 which made me realize I was shooting in COMPRESSED .RAF files which do not work with Pixinsight currently... Oh well, that imaging time is lost.

So now I'm shooting in uncompessed .RAF which opens fine in Pixinsight. But, it debayers upon opening. The pure raw setting does not work (produces a black image even after stretching) and the "raw" hint does not work during ImageIntegration.

Given that the debayering a OSC image should be done right before integrating the image, it would seem I cannot preprocess the darks or flats, perform image calibration or really do any of the preprocessing steps appropriately since they are supposed to be performed on monochromatic (bayered) images.

So here is the question... Can I import the .RAF images and allow Pixinsight to debayer the files as they are opened, then apply a bayer matrix to the color image such that 1) the image is monochromatic and 2) the color data from the image is retained? If so I could go about processing the OSC image just as I would a nikon or canon raw file with the added step of debayering the .RAF and then re-bayering the color image to a format that Pixinsight gets along with better (. cr2 or .fits for example).

Of course if you know of a better way of going about this please let me know. Any help is appreciated.

Hi jmal!
Have you set in the Format Explorer the DSLR settings to
"Create raw Bayer CFA image"  ?

See attached screenshot-
These parameter enable the loading without debayering.

Thanks the the suggestion Gerald.

I've tried selecting the "create raw Bayer CFA image" but when I do I get just a black image after opening a .RAF file. When stretching said image nothing appears, there is no data there. It is as though Pixinsight can handle the X-trans data in the .RAF so long as it is de-"X-trans"ed upon opening but otherwise it has no idea how to handle the monochromatic x-trans data.

Thus the question... can I apply a bayer matrix to the color data of the .RAF to turn it into a monochromatic image that still retains the color data and use that file for preprocessing?
