When/how are swp files purged?

I just checked my swp file directory. It is over 10gb and has files from my last process all the way to January of 2016.

It also has 'PixInsight64-update' and 'PIWebIcons' folders.

Am I safe to clean this entire directory? Or should I leave the folders?

When and how is this directory cleared by the program itself?

not safe to clear unless PI is not running. if PI crashed it might have left behind those swp files. i think it only clears the swap directory when it exits cleanly.
