Mosaic
« on: 2016 October 19 04:55:42 »
Hi,

I have been imaging a large chunk of sky and have about 35 images that cover this object (Small Magellanic Cloud) The images are in 6 rows with 2 to 6 images per row.  What is the best way to make a full mosaic of all these images.

The first row was easy cos there were only 2 images, and that worked perfectly.  The second and subsequent rows contain 4 to 6 images, which overlap on average by 2cm at the top and on the side.  Some images overlap by a third of the precious image.

Any help or pointers in this regards will be much appreciated.

John,

The way i would handle this type of mosaic is with a very basic flow of the ImageSolver script. Then MosaicByCoordinates script. Last is the GradientMergeMosaic tool. That is the basics. You can do this while linear or non-linear I can't help you there as I have used it both ways.

Here are 3 examples. All were done while non-linear because of the differences in the quality of the collected data. I image with poor equipment from a very light polluted and poor seeing enviroment.

These are 2 panel mosaics.

The last one is one that while the images are poor in quality I think show it shows the power of MosiacsByCoordinates. This was 15 panels from various camera lenses, 135, 90, 45 and 20mm. While the individual panels are not good images and there are camera lens distortions showing in some of the panels I think the fact that I could assemble this mosaic is something.

And just for fun here is the annotated version.

Thanks Mike,

I will give it a try.  My first two images I did with SA and then GMM and that worked out perfectly.  On my second row of images, nothing works.  Maybe I just got "bad" data.  I will have to have another bash at it tonight cos there are more clouds rolling in (anyone want a few clouds, I have plenty)
