We have been receiving support queries recently about an "upcoming" version 2.0 of PixInsight. Apparently some people thinks it will happen during this year, probably because of FAQ 2.22 (http://url=http://pixinsight.com/faq/), which has included the sentence "definitely not before 2016" until today. It seems also that some potential users are not buying their licenses now as a precaution against the "imminent" new release. This certainly does not help us.
I have just changed FAQ 2.22 (http://pixinsight.com/faq/) to better reflect reality. A new major version of PixInsight is right now not even an abstract idea in my head. Hopefully we still have a long road ahead with version 1.x. So come on, buy yourself a PixInsight license now. You want it. You need it. You know it! ;D

Right now it's hard to say anything precise, but definitely not before 2017. Perhaps 2020. Perhaps never.
The last part can be understood as if the development of PI will be stopped and there won't be a 2.0 version...

Not at all. I have no intention to stop development of PixInsight, just the contrary. However, let's be realistic: I am completely alone in the development of the PixInsight Core application, and I am 52. The design and implementation of a new major version is a huge task, at least for what I would consider a new major version. According to other commonly applied versioning practices (I refer to the astronomy software world specifically), we should have at least PixInsight 4.x now, but this is definitely not my style. I always want to be as transparent as possible because I believe our users deserve it, and this topic is no exception.
I'll rewrite the last part of the sentence, since I agree it may lead to unnecessary concerns. Thanks for pointing this out.

Patience. The new version comes with lots of improvements, new tools, a faster and much more stable core application, much more comprehensive and sophisticated development platforms in JavaScript and C++, and the foundations for the intense development that we'll see since this Fall/Winter and during the next years.
Please bear with me. This version is the best PixInsight ever, and more PixInsight than ever. I hope it will be ready in July, but we cannot hurry. The job is tough and very stressful for me, but I must do it well.
Thank you for your support!

I agree that PI is by far the strongest software available to use for processing our images and to make the improvements and added features that have been spoken of require a huge amount of time, concentration, and energy. I would rather wait until the announcement is made than have Juan push something out the door to silence the inquires. That said, I don't think Juan would ever consider releasing anything that hadn't been well tested by the Team just to make a deadline. Not only is he working on this vast project but he also has a life, I hope, outside of PI that requires attention and time. We don't want or need Juan to burnout. I know for me when I get into a rut and can't see the answer the best thing I could do is walk away, do something different and the answer usually came to me out of the blue. Forcing it never helped or just created more chaos and stress that accomplished nothing. I've even awakened before with the very answer I was looking for.
Just be content that when it is released it will be better than now and that's saying something of an already great program.

Guys, thank you all so much for your support. You won't have to wait much longer, promised! ;)
As for burnouts, don't worry, I am virtually incombustible :) You can bet that if PixInsight dies, it won't be because I haven't put all of the work and effort I am capable of.

Looking forward to the next Version 1.85. Looks like a quite few new goodies to play with.

Juan, you have done, and are still doing, a great job! I am using PI as my primary processing software, and I'm learning more and more by the day. Version 1.8.5 has plenty of capability, so I agree with your not worrying about higher versions in the short term.
By the way, 52 isn't very old.......I'm 67, and hopefully still have a lot of "processing runway" ahead of me.........
Regards
Bob

Juan thank you for the great software. It is rare example of program such powerful and also with such stable development over the years. Keep up the good work. :)
