How do i stop PI from resizing the main window in W10?
I want it to behave like all other windows programs: drag the window to the left edge of the screen=resize the window to cover the left half of the screen, AND STAY AT THAT SIZE.
This is so annoying when it suddenly blows up and covers what i have on the other half of the screen.
Surely there must be a setting for this, but where?

Sorry, but that doesn't solve the problem. The main window still increases in size whenever i open an image for instance, if i have resized it to use half the screen.
I want the main window to keep the size i have set it to, no matter what other actions i take in PI.
I can't see any reason for the main window to change size, other than when I as the user decides to change it. If there's a benefit with this behavior, please let me know.

That happens because you have the Information tool bar at its default bottom right location. When you open an image, the Information tool bar has to grow in order to show information about the image (dimensions, color space, pixel data size, etc), forcing the main window to also grow horizontally.
To prevent this, either hide the Information tool bar (or alternatively, the Position and/or Readout tool bars), or move it to a new row, as shown on the attached screenshot.
