I am in the process of putting together a six panel mosiac of the Witch's Head Nebula. I have a synthetic star field that is the right size for my mosaic. I am able to register all of my panels with the sythetic star field, but when I use the GradientMergeMosaic process i am getting double star images in several of the overlap areas.
What I think I need is for the Registration process to work harder to distort my images to align with the non-deformed synthetic star field. I've tried everything I can think of to no avail.
I'm attaching a screen shot of one of the seams. Some of the seams are perfect, but there are always several with double stars.
Any advice would be welcome.

try using MosaicByCoordinates to generate the registered panels. it's designed to undo these distortions.

Thank you for the tip! Probably 90% of my problems were eliminated. I'll probably play around with the various combining strategies and clamping to see if I can do better. This is about the third or fourth time you've helped me. Thanks
