Title: Fatal Error V1.8.8.3

Hi

Since upgrading to latest version, I keep getting a fatal error when part-way through a processing session. I cannot predict or recreate the error but, when it happens, Pixinsight is unresponsive and eventually closes. Attached is a screen capture of the process console. Any ideas why this is happening?

I understand your frustration. We cannot reproduce these issues on any platform, on any of our working and testing machines, so we cannot analyze, understand and fix them.

These are machine-specific issues, probably related to your graphics drivers and/or hardware. From the backtrace, the access violation error is being generated in the QProxyStyle::unpolish() routine, which belongs to a Qt library module (Qt is the third-party software library that PixInsight uses to implement its graphical user interface). QProxyStyle::unpolish() is part of the code responsible for generation of screen renditions of graphics controls, such as buttons, icons, check boxes, etc. So this is a graphics problem, and it is completely out of our control.

However, we can try to find more information, such as the exact points where these errors tend to happen more frequently, in order to robustify our code and perhaps prevent them from being triggered. I am preparing a special version of the PixInsight core application for Windows with extended debug information, which can be used for this purpose. I'll announce it on this forum when it's ready.

Thanks Juan for the pointers. At least I now have an indication of where to look. I’ll update/reinstall graphics drivers and see if that helps. Are the Qt libraries something that can be uninstalled/reinstalled? Or are these something that comes with the graphics drivers?

Hi Bill,

Qt (https://www.qt.io/) is a software library that we use to build PixInsight. It allows us to implement our entire graphical interface (along with other critical parts of PixInsight) on many different platforms, including FreeBSD, Linux, macOS and Windows, with a unique source code. The appropriate version of Qt for each PixInsight version is always included in the standard PixInsight distribution for each platform. You cannot change or install it directly.

I'll let you know when we have a special Windows version with extended debug information ready. Hopefully it will allow us to find useful information about these problems that are eluding us.

i have the same Problem. I'm running the latest version 1.8.8-3 64bit on an apple Notebook with OS X 10.15.2

Juan,

I have had this happen fairly regularly but only when running Vicent's Pattern Subtraction scripts.  That may help isolate the issue.  I am running on an HP Spectre x360 laptop, running Windows 10 home, Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763.

I am still getting this error on 1.8.8.4.  I have only noticed this happen during the Blink process, but it happens somewhat regularly.  I did not receive these errors prior to 1.8.8.3.

The MureDenoise script seems to be a particular trigger for me. After using this script, the fatal error occurs very soon afterwards. If I then restart PI, I can run for a lot longer before the error occurs. I save my project literally after each process so I don’t lose anything. Annoying, I know.

Blink always crashes PI on my machine.
