Title: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Harry page on 2009 May 17 14:09:44
Hi all

I have made some tutorial videos aimed at beginners! :D
I have felt that newbie's are sometimes put off by the supposed complexity of pixinsight , so I have made them as simple as I can ;) and relatively short, kind of bitesize.

I am sure the experts among you may do things differently and if you find any mayor problems with these let me know  ( I can take it  :P)
but as I said complex and full of tricks they are not meant to be , these can be learnt later if desired.

I am sorry for the voice but I was born with it :D

The video capture software I use does not capture everything correctly  ,mainely being that it does not pick up cursor changes correctly I hope this does not
spoil your viewing pleasure to much.

Regards Harry

Hi Fellow Pixies

I have found that my old website had become a bit of a mare to maintain as I did not have a clue what I was doing when I wrote it  :yell:

So I Have updated it after learning a bit of Dreamweaver ( If you write websites for a living you must be mad  ;D) , hopefully its a bit tidier now  8)

This Means unfortunately that a lot of old links do not work now  :'(  sorry about this , but does mean I can add more stuff more easily  :D

So Pixinsight home is now http://harrysastroshed.com/pixinsight/pixinsight%20video%20html/Pixinsighthome.html   , bit long I know I will see what I can do about that

Please let me know if anything has broke , but after 6 weeks off work I have gone web blind

Kind Regards

Harry  ( may 2014 )

Hi Houghy

Thanks for the support

If they are of help to people I was going to do a few more

Like
1) HDR wavlets
2) Colour correction
3) Noise reduction
4) Masked colour saturation stretch
5) Dynamic alignment and L rgb combination

Or is there something else people struggle with  ( I am talking newbie's here so do not ask for Atrouswavlet transform !!!!!!!!! >:D)

Regards Harry

Do the new color correction tools.
I find the color calibration dialogue a bit complex.
All are helpful

Hi Harry,

Can you write-up a couple of sentences describing how you create your video tutorials (software used, screen size selected, etc.). Not wishing to 'steal your thunder', but I am sure others (like me) might have some simple hints that are easier expressed in 30s of video than 30 lines of forum text !!

FYI, I have Camtasia Studio and would be screen-capturing using that, before post-processing to minimise file size.

Cheers,

Post by: Harry page on 2009 June 10 11:26:22
Hi Niall

You can have all the thunder and Lightning you like just leave me the clear skies ;D

I have not seen the package you intend to use and would be interested in its capabilities
I tried a dozen or so software package and ended up with a very simple package called replay http://replay-video.com/ (http://replay-video.com/) as this offered the
best quality video I could find with small file sizes.
This package creates wmv files which are  very difficult to edit without recoding ( missing video quality and  creating bigger file sizes) , also does not pick up cursor changes correctly.
I capture the full frame ( 1440 x 900) at 20 fps and 22htz sound quality

I look forward to your videos

Harry

Post by: Harry page on 2009 June 10 12:58:12
Hi Niall

I have tried the software package you suggest and indeed is very good and recodes the best I have tried.

Pity its 10 times the price  :'(

I have a 30 day trial to have a go with but video editing looks easier , but wmv still produces the smallest files,

pentax DSLR cameras use a DGN raw file while the canon camera use CR2 raw files, both do jpegs.

Hi Ladies and Gents

This weeks video is  A Introduction to Pixinsight

I have gone back to the start with this video tutorial like for the new Newbies ;D
It is a quick oversight of the desktop and a look at a few of the Icons , oh and a little look at previews
Again its not meant to be all inclusive just hopefully enough to get you going ;) before my other videos
I did struggle with this a bit and if you have any suggestions about things that should be included let me know ( or excluded )

The video is at the usual place http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthome.html (http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthome.html)

Thanks Harry,

I'll go and download, and will re-check. But I am hoping to get out and re-test my setup after one of my 5m USB active extenders 'dropped the ball' and left me head-scratching for several weeks. Isn't it amazing how this sort of problem always happens at EXACTLY the same time as you try 'something new'  >:(  (I had just changed to Nebulosity and PHD/ASCOM, from Envisage, when I seemed to enter a world of hurt with USB device enumeration. I was actually reaching for the shotgun and petrol when I spotted that the fault always happened with one particular extension. Now, £30 later, I have ANOTHER two extensions up the pier to the scope, brand new, gold-plated, and hopefully working).

So, I'll hopefully get an hour or so around midnight - hopefully it'll get dark tonight  8) (it is sometimes amazing to see how dark it is already down in London - whilst watching the tennis live on telly a few minutes ago - yet right now at just turning 23:00, I can barely make out Vega, naked eye)

Looking forward to your 'next episode' - and, a suggestion for you: make a point of showing the application of a process to an image by dragging a process icon from the workspace, and dropping it on an image (the only point that I felt you missed in your 'intro' video).

Cheers,

BTW, the new download was fine. Is it fundamentally 'the same' video? If it is then I will 'dump' the original 'corrupt audio' version.

(I never did get out last night, too knackered after Andy Murray's marathon  :D , but tonight is looking more hopeful)

I have put this video under a intermediate heading as even though it is still not a complicated video its perhaps not where a newbie wants to start

First .. thanks for the new video.  Very helpful.  I played around with some of the techniques on an image where I was having problems with "star growth" that was flooding out a nebula, in addition, the image had some tracking issues, -- the techniques in your video helped to shrink the stars as well (didn't help the nebula of course ... but oh well).

As for future stuff... I would like to see something on the ATrousWaveletTransfrom process, in particular where it might "fit" in the overall workflow, and other "ideas" on how to use it.  I've played around with it a little, but it has been just stumbling around in the dark trying to find out what to do with it.
Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Harry page on 2009 August 11 09:47:27
Hi Cheyenne

Why does the star reduction effect the nebula ??? normally the mask stops this?

Now I must admit the ATWT is a bit fiddly and need more practice( Loads and Loads of practice ) myself before doing a tutorial

Harry
Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Cheyenne on 2009 August 11 10:08:46
No.. the star masks were protecting the nebula (good thing).  I was able to clean up some star trails (good thing), but of course I couldn't help the nebula (not PI's fault... just bad tracking on my part).

-- I've only recently gotten a tracking issue resolved. I ended up having to do some worm gear adjustments to eliminate a periodic error that was combined with a backlash issue (took forever to track down -- no pun intended).

Great work Harry.

I have uploaded a 'sequel' to your video, showing just one extra way of working with the Image Container

Anybody who is interested can get it at

That's what I find - NONE of us 'know everything' - and I often find that I learn somehthing totally unexpected from watching these VidTuts. I remember on one of Juan's early videos where the image was zooming in and out, inexplicably. And then I realised that you could zoom in and out usingthe scroll-wheel on the mouse !!

I almost had a 'gut-feeling' that you hadn't been aware of 'my way' (after all, I hadn't EVER thought about doing it 'your' way). Of course, neither way is 'the' way - it is whatever the user feels most comfortable with, after all.

Hence the desire to 'bang out' a sequel as fast as possible (less than 90 minutes this time, and that included downloading and watching yours twice, making and watching mine three times, uploading to the PI server, proving that my version would download, and then watching the download as final verification)

Hopefully others will stop being 'microphone-shy' and will help us all out with their little tips'n'tricks - Juan can hold 'Los Oscaros' at the end of the year  :D

Cheers,

Oh, and I meant to mention

the process to container icon / instance trick

was something I picked up back in the 'bad old' days of Pix LE - I don't think there was any 'other' way to do things back then - although I also cannot remember what I used to use it for now  ???

Not really tutorials as there is not a lot of detail in them , but there a couple of video's on my website http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthomeinter.html (http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthomeinter.html)
showing how I did a quick process of data provided by dave ( M51) and the sword of orion provided by Houghy ( thanks for letting me use them )
They are one shot video's so please forgive the stumblings and better results could be had with a little more care

They might give people an idea of what you can achieve with non hubble data   8)

I tried to go back and watch your videos again tonight and got the following:

HTTP501/HTTP505 not implemented....I don't understand why I am getting this error message as I have watched these videos before.  Am I doing something wrong or is something going on with the website/server???

Harry,
I did as you suggested and searched on the error and got the following.....

The website is unable to display the webpage (HTTP 501 or 505)
Error 501 (HTTP 501 - Not Implemented) means that the website you're visiting is not set up to display the content your browser is requesting.

Error 505 (HTTP 505 - Version Not Supported) means the website does not support the version of the HTTP protocol your browser uses (HTTP/1.1 being the most common) to request the webpage.
These errors might occur if you have HTTP 1.1 enabled. To disable HTTP 1.1, click the Tools button, click Internet Options, and then click the Advanced tab. Under Settings, scroll down to the HTTP 1.1 settings section, and then clear the check boxes for Use HTTP 1.1. These errors might also occur if a third-party product is interfering with Internet Explorer. Try closing all programs and then attempt to access the webpage again.

I followed the instructions about disabling HTTP 1.1 and closing all programs and even rebooted all to no avail.  I am not asking you to do anything or respond.....just wanted to let you know I received your response and appreciate your time.  I will keep researching to see what might be causing this error.  As an aside.......your website is the only one to produce this error but as I said, a couple of months ago I was able to access the site and watch the videos just fine.

I am on W7 x64 and have been for the better part of a year.  As I said above, no other site, so far, presents me with this error.  I can view PI's videos and Craig Stark's videos with no issues.  I can't access Harry's website at all even with Compatibility View enabled and disabling HTTP 1.1.  What is weird, is that I was able to access and view Harry's turorials 2-3 months ago on this exact same computer with the exact same browser.   ???   I don't want to start dismantling my software and trying other stuff (browser or OS)....that shouldn't be the answer.

I'll try from my Vista x64 machine later but IE should be installed in both 32b and 64b flavors. The 32b one is more stable in my experience although I also use FF on Vista x64. Try both types if you haven't yet.

Harry,
I have researched further on Microsofts Support site and after making some changes as to how my computer reports website issues I now receive the following when I try to access your site.....

>Method Not Implemented
>GET to /pixinsighthome.html not supported.
>
>
>Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Harry,
I am not positive but everything I have read suggests that this error is sourced at the server that your website is stored on, not on my computer.  I have done everything suggested by MS to help get around these errors but nothing has worked.  I am not asking for you to do anything.....I just wanted you to know that I have exhausted all I know to do to access your website short of using another browser.  Since I have never encountered this error anywhere else on the Internet using IE, I am loathe to make a wholesale app change for the sake of one site.

Hi Andy,

I am trying to figure out 'why' your PC needed to to anything as far as "pixinsighthome.html" is concerned.

How are you trying to access Harry's tutorials? Are you relying on 'links' from verious thread responses here in the Forum, or have you tried a 'direct approach' - where you open a fresh instance of your internet browser, and type in (not 'look up', or 'accept a previous shortcut') the actual address of Harry's 'home page', and then navigate, by mouse-click, from Harry's home page down to his video tutorials.

We need to see 'where' in that process the problem is ocurring - after all, it could be that it isn't your internet browser, as such, that is causing the problems, but it might rather be the way that your browser has been (incorrectly) setup to 'deal with' the detection of Harry's actual video.

Have you tried 'saving' copies of his videos to your local machine, and then simply 'playing' the videos from there? This is BY FAR the 'most reliable' way of dealing with videos like this - you keep a copy of the video on your OWN hard drive, always ready for replay. That way, if Harry's site did experience any kind of glitch or hitch, that problem would NOT affect you.

Nowadays there are so many OTHER situations that occur to try and wrestle control of your browser away from you that it is almost CERTAIN that the problem lies in the setup/configuration of YOUR machine - but that does NOT mean that the problem will be easy to identify, especially not when it might be associated with Microsnot Windoze >:(

Enzo,
I really do appreciate trying to find me a solution but I am afraid that didn't work either.  I got the following error report from IE......

>Method Not Implemented
>GET to /pix videos/pixinsight intro (2).wmv not supported.
>
>
>Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

As I said, I have encountered this at NO other site on the Internet and I have even visited some forums on this issue and it appears to be some sort of HTML problem/error at the server Harry's site is stored on....not necessarily Harry's page itself but I can't rule that out either.

Again, thank you very much for trying!

Andy

Post by: ammcdavid on 2010 October 01 17:57:56

Hi Andy,

I am trying to figure out 'why' your PC needed to to anything as far as "pixinsighthome.html" is concerned.

I don't know why this is being returned in the error message....thus the frustration.

I have his website stored as a favorite and tried that.....didn't work.  I tried the link on the PI website....didn't work.  I tried the link on the PI forum.....didn't work.  I deleted all cookies, temp Internet files, and cache and tried the methods above....didn't work.  I typed www.harrysastroshed.com in directly....didn't work.  I have an XP machine I will try from and if successful I will download the vids and save them to my portable HD.

We need to see 'where' in that process the problem is ocurring - after all, it could be that it isn't your internet browser, as such, that is causing the problems, but it might rather be the way that your browser has been (incorrectly) setup to 'deal with' the detection of Harry's actual video.

This is what I don't understand.  I watch videos from all over the world on YouTube and other sites and have NEVER had this problem before.  Why would my browser allow access to all sorts of other videos and/or websites but not allow any access to Harry's website much less his videos?

Have you tried 'saving' copies of his videos to your local machine, and then simply 'playing' the videos from there? This is BY FAR the 'most reliable' way of dealing with videos like this - you keep a copy of the video on your OWN hard drive, always ready for replay. That way, if Harry's site did experience any kind of glitch or hitch, that problem would NOT affect you.

You can rest assured that if I ever do get to his site again, this will not be a problem for me again  :-[

Hate on Windows if you want.....many folks do.  It very well could be some setting in my browser but I have reviewed them all carefully and just aren't finding much to go on.  I am running W7 x64 w/IE8 and as I said earlier I think......on this same machine, I originally viewed Harry's videos with no problems.  The only changes to my system are the addition of any Windows Updates which are automatic and the trial version of PI.  I would think something that causes this error message with Harry's site would also wreak havoc on other sites I try to acces too....but NOTHING.   ???

Okay, I got on my daughter's XP machine and retrieved all of the vids in about 10 minutes to a stick drive... :footinmouth: so it very likely is something weird on my machine though for the life of me I can't figure out what.  Maybe this thread can now die a merciful death.  I couldn't download his vids from work due to security policies....don't know why I didn't jump on her machine a couple of weeks ago when this first came up.  Well, I did have a nasty sinus infection that turned into orbital cellulitis and was on its way to meningitis until I spent last week in the hospital getting IV antibiotics pumped through me so I will claim temporary mental incapacitation......  ::)

Hi Harry

I have also found your videos extremely useful.  I downloaded them but several of them become very pixelated as they progress - mainly the images in the process window rather than the process icons or mouse.  Has this problem been encountered by others?  I am using a Mac.

Many thanks

Harry, this is my first post (hopefully among many) on these forums. PixInsight was mentioned to me by one of my friends who works with image data from the Chandra X-Ray telescope, so I tried it out. I was confused at first, but by following your tutorials, I was able to process some 'throw away' image data I had (or so I thought) into one of the best images of M31 I've ever taken! After hours of processing in other programs, I found your intro into the unusual but effective PI interface to be enlightening.

As I run an observatory at a small school, I'll now be able to show my students the power of professional-level tools rather than try to gear them up to learn some obscure functions in Photoshop...

Thanks!

Hi

I have updated a few video's being STF / DBE and the histogram stretch and re rendered a lot of videos to make them smaller (better for yours and my bandwidth  :-*)

Also I have made the raw stacks of the image I used in the video's if you wish to have a play  ;D

All in the usual place http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthomenewbie.html (http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthomenewbie.html)

Hi Harry

I am using Equinox to image and use it for dark subtraction and LRGB conversion from a color camera.  Any advice about pre-processing of images, and automating the steps from channel extraction to producing a stacked image may be useful.

Many thanks and all the best for the New Year.

Post by: Harry page on 2011 January 01 01:37:09
Hi

I am not heard of equinox  >:D I presume its a capture program with some calibration capabilities  ;)

So you need to decided what you want to do in pixinsight if you want to calibrate your images in equinox and bring them into pixinsight you can just the registration and integration as per my video's :D
I suspect you are using a DSLR and if you are i would read this http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=2570.0 (http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=2570.0) done by mr Astropixel  ;D

I do not quite understand a couple of things 1 ) a OSC camera creates RGB images not LRGB images  2) channel extraction is easy but why do you want to do it  ;) there is no reason in pI to process each channel separately

Have a good new year

Kind regards Harry

Hi harry

I am using an SBIG XCM2000 one shot color camera.  Equinox come bundled with it (for Macs) and controls the camera and G11 through the autoguide port.  The process is to capture the images, dark subtract and then convert to LRGB in equinox.  The individual color channel files are then combined in Image Integration in PixInsight and then move on from there.  I'd be happy to do everything in PixInsight after capturing the image.

Hi

I see that you are subtacting darks  O:) are you using flats yet ?

I find it strange that the image files are saved in seperate files , I can not see the reason for this ,  you also keep using the lum word is are you getting a lum file as well ?

I am working on a calibration video now and should have it ready soon

Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: DB on 2011 January 03 14:02:18
Hi

I do subtract flats as well (but not always if I am being lazy).  As I understand it the LRGB files are saved separately, perhaps something to do with removing the Bader mask.  It certainly would be easier if the single file could be handled but would that allow processing of the luminosity separate from color?  Is there any tutorial on Pixinsight and single shot color cameras?

David
Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Harry page on 2011 January 03 14:09:37
Hi

I think the lum you are getting is a seudo lum and will bring no new info to the party  ;Dand because of this there is nothing to be gained by processing the lum seperatley from the RGB

All of my tut vids from the newbie section are from a OSC camera ( sxvf m25 )  O:)

Sorry to be slow about this.  To be clear, with a OSC camera image, you simply 1) dark/flat subtract, 2) star align and 3) stack images with Image Integration?

Hi, Harry,

Because of your tutorials, I've really progressed with learning PI over the last month or so. One thing I see a fair bit is use of the Atrous Wavelet tool and I can see that it's very powerful for doing multiple things, even for creating masks. Do I have any hope of another great tutorial from the Astroshed?

Thanks. If not, no worries, you've been amazingly helpful.

Hi Harry

I wonder if you could advise a couple of things about the OSC workflow. Presumably the above sequence also requires a 'de-bayer' step to remove the grid.  Is it possible to do this batchwise? is there anything else in the sequence needed?  Lastly, do you know if there is any support material on one shot camera workflows?

David
Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Harry page on 2011 March 06 02:00:33
Hi

Yes it should be
1) Dark /flat application
2) debayer
3) Alignment
4) Image integration

There is also a Batch debayer tool under scripts , also there is the new script to do all this in one go  ;D

All my basic videos were created using a OSC camera  8) and even if you were using a mono camera and created a RGB this way there is no difference in processing

Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: DB on 2011 March 08 02:42:13
Excellent thanks.  I found that the 'superpixel' setting was required.  That seemed to work OK.

Another basic question - when it is debayered and integrated, it is recorded as a RGB file, yet it appears greyscale. Just an image (M83) with no color?

Another great tutorial! Thanks Harry! Even a seasoned PI user can still learn something. Will try the LHE tool as soon as possible 8).

One remark though: I would recommend to do a FormatConversion to f32 as a first step (you are using i16). In particular during the histogram stretches, I tend to see posterization when doing this in i16 space with my DSLR photos.

Hi

There is a tech way of working this out which Vicent sent me , which I think is beyond the capabilities of most amateurs ( well me any way )  so he created the by eye method , which as shown in the vid is about reducing the size of your red Bandwidth until the background Galaxy's and a lot of the fainter stars disappear which in the process also removes a lot of the continuum :D

So in the true harry way its trial and error , trying not to over do it and removing the wanted Data  ;)

My very first post and it is to thank you Harry, because if not for your tutorials I would not have bought Pixinsight. Indeed i was going to try the Trial version, but after watching your tutorials I was convinced this software was for me.

As I am new I am not aware of the rules here fully yet, something i will read up on in due time. But I would like to post the link here to another local forum where I have posted my first run at using PI.

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=77974

One question, I understand that one learns by trial and error, but how did you learn to sequence you actions in a certain workflow. Is it just something you already knew from using other software?

Also is there some repository here or on the general internet of data you can get to test your processing skills?

My sincere Thanks and Regards
Fahim

Harry,
Thankyou very much for all your great tutorials on PI.

Although there is a huge amount of tutorial information on the PI website, your video tuts have been instrumental in getting me up to a level with PI where I can begin to get some pleasing results from my images.

I have just looked at you latest tutorial on building Mosaics and just like your other tutorials, this will be a great help in my learning process. So again, I thankyou.

At the risk of being a bit cheeky  ;) it would be really great if you were ever inclined to make a tutorial on the process you use to create your Dark and Flat calibration frames as this is an area where I continually struggle.

I have used the information available on the web site and although helpful in getting me started, some additional guidance in the form of a tutorial along similar lines to your other video tuts would be a huge help.

Again, thanks for all your great work.

Cheers,
Luke

Hi Harry,

Thanks very much for posting that HDR Composition video!

At first, I didn't think of HDR Composition as a very complicated tool. I said to myself `well, I know how to use that one, I'll just watch this because Harry's videos are fun to watch.' (They really are!) I foolishly thought I didn't have much to learn.

Now I'm having a `facepalm' moment, over my arrogance. Of course! HDR Composition can help replace the burned-out cores of the stars! I never thought of that. I spend most of my `Pixinsight mental bandwidth' thinking about how to make stars look better. I have to try this. Maybe some short exposures and some HDR Composition should just be part of a standard workflow, hmmm...

Thanks! I definitely learned something I didn't know!

Hi Harry,

I am just watching your H alpha adding video tutorial and there is one thing which really annoying me. In the first pixel math step, you say just use the red channel here, but you add your RGB image there. So to my understanding this is wrong? Or do I miss something? Then I have an addional question, is it normal only to add the H alpha to the red channel? Then I also know, to add it in linear stage, but when should I do the ATrousWavlet Noise Reduction, befor or after it?

Thanks,

Hey Astronomers :)

I'm  completely new in this hobby  so I've some questions(or more  ^-^ )

I followed this tutorial: http://pixinsight.com/tutorials/master-frames/en.html to step 1: By creating a Masterdark PI gives out 3 Images called: Gray_Integration, Gray_rejection low and Gray_rejection high. Which oh these images is my Masterdark? And analogue which of these images will be my master-bias?
And is this correct?
Darkframe same exposure as a Lightframe?
BIAS-frames less as possible exposure?
Flatframes should be saturated that the peak is in the middle of the graph?

Greetings from germany :D

Hi

The integration will be your new dark frame  :D Rejection high and low are the maps which show you which pixels have been rejected during integration ( outliers as we call them )
Non of these is a bias frame, you need to create one separately, and you are right on the rest

I personally would not create them one at the time and would use the batch processing script as it is far easier  >:D

Kind regards Harry

But you said that i've no Masterbias, but i've made bias and integrated them as shown in the tutorial.
So the integrated frame is my masterbias or isn't it?

Kind regards

Hi
My Friends

I have been getting a lot of questions lately about my vids, mainly due to the" old look" so as there has been a lot of updates to PI recently and does look very different from a lot of my video's even if the underlying method is the same, I shall redo them all in 1.8 .

So a question for you all , where can I improve , did I miss something ?  and while I am at it what new ones would you like ?

Please do tell

Kind Regards

Wow! That would be a lot of work!
While I too notice that PI looks quite a bit different in its latest incarnation than in the videos, I have had no trouble following them. Being totally selfish, I'd prefer you spent your efforts on new videos rather than redoing old ones.   :P

A suggested workflow for images from first opening them in Pi to closing the programme would help me. I am often confused about when to make the switch from linear to stretched.

And thanks for your mighty efforts to date. I'd never have gotten off the ground with PI were it not for your videos!

Hi,

I'd like to put in a "+1" for Terry's suggestion. There is no problem to follow the videos with the older PI versions. However, for me as a beginner it was/is hard to put them together to a basic workflow. A DSLR workflow from the beginning to the end with common tasks, hints/tool suggestions (like different approaches for nebulae/galaxies, incorporating Ha into DSLR-RGB, etc) would be an enormous help to anyone first encountering PI.

By the way, many thanks for the "What do they do" section on your page.

Finally: a repetition of Terry's last sentences: "And thanks for your mighty efforts to date. I'd never have gotten off the ground with PI were it not for your videos!"

I am not a expert on dslr images , but after calibration I see very little in how you handle the data , say from my OSC colour camera

But I think as well as the video update I might collate some of the very good imformation from this forum into say

Many thanks for your input

Nice go, Harry.

Just for the sake of experimenting, could you try to find the correct settings with the local support (use the automatic one, default settings), and compare it to the result you achieved with the masked one?
I think that the edge protection should be the same, but the strength will be too high.

While IP4AP has excellent and very complete information, the delivery of the narrative is so slow and deliberate that is becoming very distracting and annoying in my mind.

Harry, your videos not only deliver the goods but do so in a way that is much more entertaining as well and keeps one's attention focused much better.

The only other YouTube series of videos on PI that I have found that come close to your level are those by Jason Brown.
Between the two of you, any relative newcomer to PI (like myself) should get up and running in no time at all.

i suggested to warren that he find an embedded flash player that can do time stretching, but i think he didn't understand; he suggested the user find such a player. that kind of doesn't work unless you download the video.

anyway if you look at coursera or edX or whatever, they have video players that can time stretch and they work pretty well. if the narrator/professor speaks too slowly, just speed up to 1.25x or 1.5x or whatever and you're good.

Guys!  I didn't intend to stir up anything here.  Just to say how much I admire Harry's and Jason's efforts to reach out to us who aren't very proficient at PI.  Wahren's videos are great in content, but for a "pay to play" product I thought they needed a bit more polish.  In fact, (my opinion only) Both Harry and Jason beat out Wahren in thier ability to connect with the viewer.  The only problem is a lack of depth in the content when compared to Wahren.  But I'm certainly not complaining. Who knows, in time it may get there (only so much can be expected from a free tutorial series).  In the meanwhile, I eagerly await new videos from my top 2 PI guys!

Harry

The current vids are a near a perfect length.  Especially when taken in sequence when doing a whole process on an image.  But I agree that some (pixel math for instance) could use a bit more time as a stand alone topic.

As a relative newcomer to PI, I can truthfully state that my first wish was to actually get results from a processing run.  You series of vids accomplished that very admirably.  Now that I am sort of getting used to the feel of the program and a less vague understanding of what different tools are for I find a desire to understand why certain parameters can be changed and how to make a condiered decision on what to change them to.  Tolerance for instance,  or maybe sample radius in DBE.  It is well and good to say "try this" and I do it and achieve an acceptable result.  But until I get a proper understanding of what I am trying, I will be forever tied to the suggestions in the vids.  "Just experiment through trial and error" - this works but is very time consuming and still doesn't teach me anything about what I am changing and why.  Of course, some of the terminology used in PI is definitely Klingon or some other alien language.  I'm sure they are all very proper terms to accurately decribe the tools, but they are definitely in some form of greek.

To summarize:  You could break a PI users experince into 1) newbie - can't do anything without the videos 2) know just enough to get into trouble unless the video is running in the background for quick reference   3) Can do it OK on at least half of the attempts without video support but fails the other half and don't know why [decribes me perfctly] 4) can process most images on my own with only intermittent need for assistance, probably by questions here on the forum 5) got it covered - know what I'm doing now 6) As you put it -Jedi Master, able to impart my vast knowledge and experience to others.

What I seek is something in the level 2 or 3 area, with some type 4 every now and agian.  Call it intermediate if you will.  A discussion of why we make certain choices under differing conditions would cover most of this.

Well - I fell like I'm rambling now.  But I think you get my intent.     ;)

Hi Harry - first thanks for the comet alignment tut (and the others) but its the comet one I'm having problems with when the comet is near any nebulosity. Against a plain star background there's no problem with stacking the comet data and applying as per you tut to the star background.
When there's nebulosity in the area the stars are removed but the nebulosity is left and of course this is then trailed across the image depending on how far the comet has moved during the series of exposures.
Is there any way of removing the nebulosity from the comet aligned image before continuing with the integration?

Asked this in the general section with some attachments:

Hey Harry...again thanks for doing the vids to show us newbies how to use and work with pixlnsight.  I do have a request for a new video if you are so inclined to do one.  I have watched all your vids for the newbie but I am confused on where to start and in which order do you go to process and astro photo. I am using the Orion StarShoot G3 Deep space CCd imager to get my images right now (I also bought a Canon 70D DSLR but haven't used it much yet). I use Deeps space stacker to get my images stacked and aligned and then open that image in pixlnsight but from this point I do not understand where to start and in which  order do you go to start processing your pics.  I have your basic "workflow chart" but again I find it a bit confusing and I, personally learn better by watching a vid and following along.  Have you done a video of starting to process and image and then go all the way thru to where you save it? I am going to insert 2 attachments (hope they go thru) of M51 and M106 I processed fumbling my way thru the program. I wanted you to see how far I have progressed using your tips and vids but they still are not clear enough or just not as good as I know they can get.  Thanks again Harry

Hi Mikalovich,

I suspect Harry can fix you right up.

You might also want to post in the General section and see if Jim Morse chimes in.  He has an excellent "Crib Sheet" which he is quick to share.  It's a text document with basic steps 1, 2, 3 .... etc.  It is also extensive with some pretty sophisticated stuff.

Thanks Mark...I will do that and look for Jim's stuff. I am actually finally starting to get some images but I suspect I am not doing it right lol When I stretch the image with the histogram, the image I see on the desktop is completely white, with no definition or object in it but when I save it to my folder I can see the image and at times it is still dark so I have to stretch it again.  At times I will have to stretch it out 9 times before I get a decent image that I can see, so like I said I susect I am doing something wrong.

Hi Mikalovich,

As a beginner in Pixinsight, it was a tremendous help for me to follow Harry's video tutorials. I came from the same background (DeepSkyStacker), so I dare to strongly recommend you to use Pixinsight exclusively - meaning forget DSS, start Introduction and Overview and with the BathcPreprocessing script, and follow Harry's tutorials in that order as you can see them on his website Pixinsight Newbie Tutarial videos. They built on each other and gives us a fairly good path to follow.

I also learned a lot from Kayron Mercieca http://lightvortexastronomy.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html (http://lightvortexastronomy.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html) about workflows and different technics. If you use DSLR, see his Pixinsight Workflow for DSLR http://lightvortexastronomy.blogspot.com/2013/12/tutorial-post-processing-pixinsight.html (http://lightvortexastronomy.blogspot.com/2013/12/tutorial-post-processing-pixinsight.html)
Jim Morse "Cribsheet" is one of the best "practical" documentation of PI.

As for the Histogram Transformation and white pictures, it seems to me the typical case when you have no perfect understanding how to handle ScreenTransferFunction and HistogramTransformation, when to reset HT and how to use preview in HT. Harry's video and DSLR workflow of Kayronim can be help for that.

PI is still a big mistery sometimes for me, but I hope the above will give you a start for quick succes to postprocessing with PI.

Cheers

Hi

Just started out with a Ha filter and I am looking to use the video tutorial you produced http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsight/pixinsight%20video%20html/pixinsighthomeinter.html and Vicent Peris' equation. I have a small query on the first PixelMath equation used. The number 12 is used in the video and said to be the size of the filter. Can you clarify was the size refers to?

Many thanks

Alec

Hi Alec,

This refers to the filter bandwidth, such as 7nm, 3nm, etc.

Kayron

Harry;
Like your website, I keep it up while I'm working with Pixinsight. I have used Pixinsight for a few years now but not often enough to have memorized key strokes and shortcuts.
Some items a Newbie might find helpful... Some simple things like keyboard shortcuts and some scripts (for example Aggregating Previews) that are used within your videos are not listed on the table of contents on your webpage.  As I come across the need for a tool, I have a hard time finding where it is, sometime I find it easier to search your videos than the program itself.  On your topic screen, maybe put a list of functions that video is using.
An idea for an intermediate video: Is there a way to register and combine frames from different sources; different cameras and different imaging trains?  I have played with the NASA Hubble library and from Slooh to learn Pixinsight and have always wondered how those guys combine images from different sources.  I have a few different imaging trains I use and other than Photoshop, I find it difficult to combine images that have different pixel/angle densities, dimensions and distortion.

I enjoy your videos.

Quick question regarding your M31 Workflow.  You perform CC after debayering, however, would the reverse be suitable for hot pixel issues?
Title: Re: Harry's video tutorials
Post by: Harry page on 2016 March 01 14:04:07
Hi

by cc I presume you mean colour correction !  this is obviously is done after debayering

hot pixels need sorting out with either cosmetic correction and or pixel rejection during integration

not sure what you mean by reverse of cc ?

Love all your Vids, and downloaded them too,  AND made a well deserved Contribution to the cause !!

My question is this:  How do I combine BINNED color images (2X2)   to non-binned images ??   You mention it in one of your videos but then you just used the Star Alignment tool and LRGB tool.   Is that all there is to it ??  Don't I have to use the Resample Tool ??

Thanks again,

Dennis

Hi

9.9 out of 10 times the star alignment tool will resample the binned image to the non binned image automaticaly ( make sure the lum is the referance image )

on the odd occasion it does not work you can as you say resample the binned to match the lum and this will manage the other 0.1 :)

Many thanks for your help  ;D

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the quick response !!

I just tried the star alignment method and YES it worked andregisterd them to each other.   BUT,  when I tried to combine into an HSO image , it didn't work.   Let me add,  I am only using ONE sub of each HA, OIII, SII  and they are still LINEAR with NO processing.  I was just trying it out for the first time.   Is the problem the fact that they are LINEAR and therefore won't combine using the Channel Combination tools ??

Still a Newbie after almost two years of this crazy hobby,

Dennis

Hi
combination at the linear stage is common and should not cause you a problem ?

You say it did not work , could you explain more - did you get a error message etc   , we can then see if we can help

I would say a single sub of each is likley to be very noisey

Thanks a lot (again) for your instructive tutorials! I just wondered if you still upload your videos to your YouTube channel? I really found this really awesome to learn stuff even when abroad!

Very Best!

Hi,
I am having difficulty accessing your tutorials for newbies. After downloading and trying to open I get a message saying "Quick Time" can't open it. I am a Mac user (completely locked into their eco system and do not intend starting again with Windows equipment). Is there some other way I can open these video tutorials - which hopefully will not be too complicated.
Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

Hi David,

When you decide on which tutorial video(s) you want to watch, these should ideally be downloaded to your machine. Your Web Browser should tell you the name of the file that you are downloading and, more importantly, it's file extension - amd it is the file extension that determines how the video was encoded.

When you then want to 'play' the video, you need a player that is capable of 'decoding' the downloaded file.

If you don't therefore have the correct codec installed in your machine, then you won't be able to play the video in question.

I just checked one of Harry's videos, selected at random, and it had an .mp4 file extension. From my experience of QuickTime, this application is geared up towards Mac victims, sorry, users who are going to work with .mov extensions.

There are, unfortunately a bewildering (and, imho. wholly un-necessary  :police:) number of video and audio codecs available for users to select - and so you cannot blame the person who performed the encoding process. It is when 'locked-up' or 'hooked-in' OS vendors specifically obfuscate the solution process that users, like yourself, are left somewhat 'peeved'.

Perhaps another Mac user has resolved the problem and can help here?

Hi

Most of the vids are mp4 and will play fine on a Mac no probs

But there are a couple that are wmv files which are not directley supported by macs , but do know there are free wmv players out there which will work fine

I did wmv files when I first started as they create small files , but found mp4 to be more comparable with more os. So I changed to these. ( yes those Mac people  >:D)

Harry

just download VLC, it plays everything. or download mpv. both exist for OSX. nothing is locked down or locked in on OSX.

for crying out loud, there is even a finder plugin for FITS files which lets you use quick look on FITs files.
