We have received a lot of questions recently regarding the commercial release of PixInsight. Here is a small FAQ for those who want to know.
Q.
Does the commercial version require
an active Internet connection to work?
A. Not at all. The commercial
PixInsight application only requires an active connection to carry out
the online license activation procedure, which takes place the first
time you run the PixInsight core application. Once activated, the
commercial application does not need an active Internet connection.
Q.
Must I buy two licenses to use
PixInsight on Windows and Linux?
A. No. The commercial license
gives you the right to use PixInsight on all supported platforms and
operating systems. This currently includes Linux and MS Windows. We
have the intention to port the whole PixInsight platform to Mac OS X
during 2008.
Q.
Will you limit the number of
installations?
A. Absolutely not. Our
commercial users will have the right to install and use PixInsight on
any computer they own. The only limit that we expect our users to
observe is that only they, as commercial licensees, have the right to
use their copies of PixInsight. Other than the fact that a commercial
licensee cannot share his/her copy of our software, we'll impose no
restrictions.

Are you selling licenses to entities
(as astronomy clubs and associations for example)?
A. Juridic entities, as
associations and clubs, cannot be commercial users of our software.
We'll only sell PixInsight licenses to physical persons, that is, to
individuals.
Q.
Are special agreements available for
universities to acquire software licenses?
A. In the case of universities,
our company can reach agreements to the distribution of special
licenses, under conditions negotiated between both parts to adapt to
each particular case. Each license sold under these conditions will
give the right to use a maximum number of copies of our software,
exclusively by personnel of a particular university department.

What about software upgrades? Will
additional PixInsight modules be free?
A. Commercial users will have
access to all software upgrades for PixInsight version 1.0 at no charge.
This includes all standard modules that we'll publish for this version.
Of course, we refer only to modules developed by the PixInsight
Development Team (these are what we call
standard modules); we cannot
speak for modules authored by third-party developers. You can expect
to see a lot of new standard modules developed during 2008, extending
PixInsight's functionality considerably.

Which kind of support will you
offer?
A. All licensees will be
entitled to email support. However, our best support resource is
PixInsight Forum, which is
the official community of PixInsight users. Along with that, we are
constantly authoring and releasing processing
tutorials and
examples.
Q.
Do you have special conditions
available to developers interested in the PixInsight/PCL framework and
PixInsight JavaScript Runtime Environment?
A. Of course. We are very
interested in building an active and dynamic community of developers
around the PixInsight platform. Please contact us if this is your case.
Q.
Which payment method will you
implement?
A. Exclusively online payment
through credit cards. We'll implement a PayPal
based payment system. We'll sell only downloadable versions of our software.
Q.
What about the price?
A. 171 Euros. Users in the European
Union will have to pay an additional 16% VAT rate. The final price for EU
users is 198.36 Euros, taxes included.
