New Reference Documentation Released: ImageIntegration
« on: 2011 December 05 00:44:42 »
Hi,

Everything you always wanted to know about ImageIntegration but were afraid to ask is now available as an update, and also online:

http://pixinsight.com/doc/tools/ImageIntegration/ImageIntegration.html

(Recommended browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari. MS Internet Explorer 9 works but won't render this document correctly because it has bugs. IE 8 doesn't have SVG support).

I have wanted to be particularly exhaustive in the documentation of this essential tool. The information given is very important to understand many fundamental topics, and also to value our implementations.

Hope you like it. Enjoy!

some very minor and pedantic corrections:

"where we have splitted each image" -> "split". split is actually the present and past tense of the word... it is an irregular verb.

"without sacrifying so much signal." -> "sacrificing". i can't tell if sacrify is in the english lexicon anymore - it may be archaic.

"named after statiscian Charles P. Winsor" -> "statistician"

"rejection maps for each pixel rejectin algorithm" -> "rejection algorithm"

also per the discussion before regarding the file cache - there should probably be some mention of how using the file cache is tied to computing the SNR of the subframes and how it is probably useful to turn it off when integrating calibration masters.

Wow, this is real documentation ! Not like the "Press <ok> to finish the dialog." found in some other products.
Thanks!

Thank you guys for your nice words. Glad you like it!

I have updated the document with Rob's corrections. Not pedantic at all, I appreciate them very much. As you know English isn't my native language, so I may well make mistakes and it's nice to know you'll report them. I have fixed also a few more that I've found; there must still be more for sure.

I have added a new section on management of the persistent file cache, and an usage hint about disabling it to integrate calibration frames. Hopefully this limitation will be overcome in a future version of the tool, with a completely redesigned cache system.

The online document is also updated with the latest version.

That's the idea, Georg. I really hate that kind of pointless documentation. If we have to write something, I hope it will be useful and well presented. Now let's start writing the next one... :)

Juan,

Thanks for all your hard work. As someone else commented, reading your docs is like taking a class in astro image processing!

I feel like I've learned so much since I started using PI.

Yours,

Whatever you do, do NOT write a spell checker to check the documentation for spelling mistakes and typos. Just use a third party tool, okay?  ;)

Very nice work on the docs, indeed.

Damn! now that I have it half coded! ::)

Seriously, as part of the improvements to the script editor that will be implemented in future versions, a spell checker is on the way. I'll integrate some open source spell checker, of course, I like reinventing the wheel but not up to that limit!

Under hints, I was expecting some kind on quick reference for settings to start out with for light frames, dark, flat and bias.

This is  the question that asked over and over again in the forums. Some might call this default recommendations  ;)

This is documentation!  Great job.  One thought is under the discussion of Normalization you mention it is not recommended except in special conditions.  I would add that one of these occasions is integration of Bias and dark frames to create masters???
