how can i fix an image with drift in one direction?
« on: 2011 June 09 04:46:12 »
i had over 4 hours worth of data - all done after my win 7 guiding setup turned off the usb port my guider was using (yes i left it unattended) and i dont understand how it happened, must have been reset after an update? .  any clues on how i can save the data or is this nights effort wasted?  just did a quick lift in histogram to see the errors

Deconvolutions, and/or MorphologicalFilter

Try deconvolution with the motion blur PSF, play a bit with length and angle to find the correct.
But I think this may save the stars but your subject will be blurred anyway

I can't help but if you try and make headway with the suggested motion blur PSF please post back with your workflow.
I've wrestled a little bit with this and came up lacking.

I will borrow your image naming convention ... applies well to many of my images.   :-[

I've tried the motion blur deconvolution too and it never seems to work for me or rather it works, but not the way I want it too! I use morphological transform using median and a size of 7, then depending on the motion I darken the pixels to remove the motion. It takes some experimentation and is not a 'magic bullet', but with a little work and Pixinsight magic, it can do a 'reasonable' (YMMV) job!

My usual response is to forget about salvaging the image and instead see what I can do to prevent it from happening again. No amount of post processing can recover the data lost due to smearing. I mean if you're desperate the salvage something from the image then it's a different story but I'm afraid in the end you won't be happy with the result.
Best,
